Edith O. Martell, 98 of Jewett City, CT peacefully passed away at home, February 8, 2023. She was born May 26, 1924 in Pawcatuck, CT the 8th child of 12, to Luella (Morgan) and William Thompson. She is survived by her brother, Almont Thompson, of Pawcatuck. Edith was predeceased by the love of her life - her beloved husband, John W. Martell.
As a teenager, she assisted her mother caring for her younger siblings. Her young years caring for others shaped her inviting, unselfish, loving empathy until her last breath. In her late years, as the family’s matriarch, she said: "I love all my children and their families and pray for them every night." Edith is remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Blessed with the gifts of compassion and hospitality, all were welcomed at her kitchen table. She shared kindness and generosity making others feel deeply loved. Many found comfort and love from her wisdom and sense of humor. She said to many - "You are my child, also." She taught herself to read, crochet, and sew. Her children/grands/greats received a gift of her talents. Even with her painful arthritic hands, she would finish a blanket or other gifts for her loved ones. She loved playing card games. Two of her favorites were Pitch and SkipBo. She was baptized with her oldest son in 1954 as a member of the denomination Community of Christ. For years she taught Sunday School and invited her friends' children to attend church youth camps. Through her actions and words, she invited others to experience the love of God.
Edith is survived by 9 children: son, Gilbert (Linda) Martell, Billings, MT; son, George (Sue) Martell, Freeport, FL; daughter, Jean (Mike) Barber, Wood River Jct., RI; son, Howard Martell, Griswold, CT; son, James Martell (Jane Hylan), Wakefield, RI; daughter, Marjorie (George, predeceased) Smith, Jewett City; son, Richard (Susan) Martell, Mystic, CT; son, Timothy Martell, Jewett City; and son, John Jr. Martell (Cheri Sullivan), Gales Ferry, CT. She had 24 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 2 grandchild and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Edith’s Family is grateful for the home care staff for their loving-care during her final years of life. May Edith’s life of generosity and love be a testimony for all of us to emulate. There will be a memorial service held at the Griswold Funeral Home, formerly the Leffler Funeral Home at 30 N. Main Street, Jewett City, CT. on Saturday Feb 18th from 2-3PM.

To The entire Martell family, I send my deepest sympathy. I only met Edith a couple of times but I remember her sweet nature. The fun stories I would hear from Sarah, John and Cheri made me fall in love with your Nana! I'm sure she will be greatly missed .
