Vero Beach - Heidi Truscott died peacefully in her home in Vero Beach on February 22nd, 2024, with her loving daughter and caregiver, Lindsey, by her side.
Edith Richmond Howe was born in Providence, Rhode Island on November 22nd, 1937, to Dunton Howe and Elizabeth Merriman. During WWII they lived in New York City and settled in
Ponte Vedra, Florida after the war. However, the constant in Heidi's life was Little Compton, Rhode Island where she spent 85 summers. She graduated from Pine Manor College and in 1959 she married George Truscott, her husband of 49 years. After living three years in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, they moved back to George's hometown of Buffalo, New York.
Heidi was a highly successful real estate agent in Buffalo having returned to the work force in the early 1970's, while always having time for her children's sports and school activities. She was a big supporter of Nichols School of Buffalo. She put her children first and introduced them to Little Compton, RI continuing a family tradition. In 2002, Heidi purchased her home in Vero Beach, and she and George gave up the Buffalo snow to enjoy Vero Beach in the winters and Little Compton in the summers. Heidi was a dedicated and fun-loving member of the Sakonnet Golf Club, the Sakonnet Point Club, Warren's Point Beach Club, the Riomar Country Club, and Quail Valley Country Club.
Heidi was preceded in death by her sister, Toni, her parents, and her husband. She is survived by her daughters, Lindsey Breslin (Ned), Elizabeth Truscott, and her son, William "Ted" Truscott (Kathy). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jemma Breslin, Kimberley Breslin, Rafael Mueller, Jennifer Tarantino (Mike), Eliza Gallagher (Pat), Grace Piotrowski (Mike), her three step-grandchildren, Henry, Emily, and Harriet Sidford, and two great grandchildren, Brooke Tarantino, and Lucy Gallagher.
Heidi recently stated to her daughter, "I've had a wonderful life." This included Heidi 's hobbies as an excellent tennis player, love for the beach, an avid reader, a follower of national politics, and a curiosity about the world. In her later years she traveled around the globe with great enthusiasm usually accompanied by at least one if not more friends. A fan of theatre, lectures, and museums, Heidi enjoyed all that Vero Beach, Buffalo, Toronto, Little Compton, and New York City had to offer. She loved her friends and had a very active social life where she was often the life of the party. Heidi said what she thought and was known for her direct communication style.
Her family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the caregivers from Stacey's Family Private Care, Gertrude, Novelette, Nina and Ima who provided excellent care for Heidi and treated her with deep kindness over the past nine months.
Her family will host a celebration of her life in Little Compton, RI this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heidi's favorite charity, The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, or the Vero Beach Hospice VNA.
Arrangements are entrusted to Strunk Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1623 North Central Avenue, Sebastian, Florida 32958.
