Edna Lehman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 29, 2015.
Edna A. Lehman, age 98, died unexpectedly on October 28, 2015 following complications from a fall. She was born on February 9, 1917 at Union Star Cheese Factory in Zittau, WI which was founded in 1911 by her parents, the late Henry and Ida(Speigelberg)Metzig. Edna married the 'hired hand' Eugene Lehman, on November 7, 1942, at the factory. The ceremony was delayed a few minutes when the doorbell rang and a cheese customer had to be waited on. Eugene preceded Edna in death on July 27, 1999. Edna attended high school in Oshkosh. Edna and Gene owned and operated Union Star from 1966 until retiring in 1980. Edna's entire life revolved around the cheese factory. She was a hard worker, but loved every minute of it! She would sometimes fall asleep at the most inopportune time (like during the Indianapolis 500). Edna was proud Union Star is still in operation today by third and fourth generation Metzig's. Edna received her cheesemaker license in 1966 and was one of the first women in Wisconsin to do so. She was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 391, a volunteer at the Veterans Home in King, and an active member at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zittau. Even though she did not sew, she loved making quilts with the quilters at Immanuel. Edna is survived by two daughters, Carol(Philip)Young, Appleton and Beth(Roger)VanGroll, Little Chute; four grandchildren, Sara(David)Wollgast, Verona, IL; Laura(Shawn)Everhart, Brussels, Belgium; Maia VanGroll and Alexander(Clare)VanGroll, both of Little Chute; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Clare Wollgast and Nolan and Calvin Everhart; three sisters-in-law, Lydia Metzig, AZ; Ruby Niemuth, Clintonville; and Anne Lehman, Hortonville; a brother-in-law, Vilas(Linda)Lehman, Arbor Vitae; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Tyler VanGroll; a brother, Harvey; three brothers-in-law, Reinhard(Geraldine)Lehman, Vernon Lehman, and Harold Niemuth; a sister-in-law, Eileen(Hollis)Sether. A celebration of Edna's life will be held on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 9077 North Rd., Fremont. Pastor Mark Kinney will officiate. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Lewin Funeral Home, Fremont, on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The family will also greet family and friends after the church service. A memorial fund has been established.
Edna's family wishes to extend a special Thank You to the 5th floor staff at AMC, as well as the staff and residents at the Renaissance for the wonderful care and friendship. Edna loved people and people loved her! "I had a wonderful life!"
Mom and Grandma, we will miss you and always love you!

We will remember Edna for her steadfast dedication at Union Star, her devotion to family, and her service to others. Buy cheese since 1970 at Union Star has become a regular part of our life. She touched many others lives. Roger was a diving friend and wife Beth was introduced in the late 1979 time. A small world. Grace and peace.

Dear Carol and Beth,
My sincere sympathy to both of you on the recent passing of your mother. She was a dear friend and I have many memories of chatting with her at Zittau. I remember the many times with her and my aunt Vivian Niemuth as very dear friends. A memorial will be sent to Immanuel church. God's Peace. Mildred and Gerry Marks

I will always remember her happy spirit every time I saw her where she would always reply, "Things are good! I can't complain, everything is fine"! I always felt graced in her presence as she was always positive and I am sure she cherished each day the Lord gave her just by the way she seemed to appreciate each day given to her.

She will certainly be missed...may you be at peace with our Lord and dancing with joy as your spirit showed me! Love, Yurri and Gary

My sympathies on the passing of Mrs. Lehman. I remember her from the cheese factory when I was a child, and from visiting Wilma and Eldrew's home. (I went to FVL with Candy.) God has her in his keeping; you have her in your hearts.

Deepest sympathy to the family for this great loss. The loving- kindness of GOD can sustain you through this sad time and in the days ahead. In part of the passage in Psalm 90 verse 10, it states, " The span of our life is 70 years, or 80 if one is especially strong......" Your love one lived well beyond that average life span. It was a blessing to the family. May you find a measure of comfort as you share loving memories.

I thought you were the sweetest little lady. I couldn't wait to see you every year at the Turkey dinner in Fremont. I use your recipes out of the cookbook. I know you'll be greatly missed by your family and everyone that knew you. Bless you, honey.

Carol and Beth,
Your mother was an amazing and wonderful woman. Dave and I always delighted in seeing her. Her sense of humor and outlook on life gave customers and her many friends a great deal of joy. I have fond memories of visiting the cheese factory, as a child, and interacting with you girls as well as Henry and Ida. I think Edna was a "chip off the old block" of Henry! She certainly reminded me of her father with his teasing and ready smile. And.....your dad. Dave and our son remember with great joy a very special Canadian fishing trip with my Dad and Gene. We miss all of those wonderful folks. They have all added so much to our lives. Edna's was a life well and richly lived. We will never hear "just say cheese" without thinking of your lovely family. Our deepest sympathy to you all.

We wanted to offer our sympathies- Like so many other people - we have been customers for 50 years of Union Star. Some of the finest cheese and by far the best cheese curds. Mrs. Lehman was a remarkable woman- Thank you for the many memories

Beth, Carol and family - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time. I remember the times we would come out to Wisconsin and got to spend time (and overnights) by your mom. My daughter loved spending time with her and at the lake. She will be missed by all

Sorry to hear Edna is not with us physically, knowing she is resting in Jesus' arms and has started her journey in heaven... She set a great example of her faith in all the things she did and of course through her wonderful smile.. I am thankful I had gotten to know her.
