Edsel Ford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2025.
Edsel Daniels Ford was born at home in 1929 in Crosby County, Texas. As a young boy, his family moved to Denton, where they lived in a house on the corner of Ponder and Scripture, just steps away from what was then North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas). That proximity shaped his future-he would go on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees there.

He shared a special bond with his older brother, Benjamin, and often spoke of how deeply he missed him after his passing.

A proud Korean War veteran, Edsel served in the U.S. Navy and carried many of the discipline, routines, and values he learned there throughout his life.

For more than 40 years, he was a coach, teacher, and Driver's Education Consultant with Tyler ISD, where he influenced generations of students. Later in life, he found joy in being recognized in the community by former students who fondly remembered learning to drive under his guidance.

Edsel was a devoted husband to Mona Miller Ford, who preceded him in death. He was an active and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, always ready to offer sage advice-often delivered with his signature dry wit. Though many described him as a man of few words, he had plenty to say when the conversation turned to politics or religion.

He had a deep appreciation for music, especially the sounds of B.B. King, Cab Calloway, and Emmylou Harris. Though he "couldn't carry a note in a bucket," as he liked to say, that never stopped him from singing along. A steadfast supporter of public education and a proud United Methodist, Edsel lived a life of service, faith, and quiet strength.

He is survived by his son, John Ford (and Kelli Ford) of Tyler; his daughter, Jill Ford Zavala (and Angel Zavala) of Kilgore. And his beloved grandchildren: Skylar Ford (and Julie Allen) of Whitehouse, John Britton Ford (and Kelli Easterly) of Chandler, Worth Clark and Felix Zavala both of Kilgore. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Brayden and Jameson Ford of Whitehouse, who brought him endless joy. Services will be held on Saturday, September 6. 2025 at Fairwood United Methodist Church in Tyler from 3-4 pm.
