I had the privilege of working with Ed at Willson Stationers in the late 80s/early 90s. Ed was the President and I was the VP of National Operations.
Ed was a numbers man, very well connected, seasoned, polished business man, quiet, low key demeanor and typically a man of few words. I am a people person and was focused on numbers but more focused on people growth and processes....and yes I liked to talk. My demeanor mystified Ed at times.
My best friend, Rick McKay, worked with me and was in charge of national commercial sales....Ed liked me but he loved Rick. Rick was a numbers guy and was wound up like a top (best sales person I ever met).....and Rick was a very funny guy and would get Ed laughing, many times about me, listening to Rick's stories.
Well Ed would ask Rick why Miles is happy when commercial sales are up and retail sales are flat or non-on target. So Rick would ask me.
We had the utmost respect for Ed as a person and a business man. While working, and after leaving Willson's, we golfed with Ed many times.
We have stayed in touch with Ed and planned to visit him this fall (with James McLeod) but we missed this boat.
I/we have nothing but great memories and the utmost respect for Ed....great guy...we miss you Ed.....BTW, still working and my sales are up.
