Edward Carter, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.

"Life is a carnival, I've ridden all the rides, and it's time to go home."

Lynn Carter departed his carnival at the age of 79 after a long illness on May 18th, 2025. He lived many chapters and built many close friendships in his life, and his true obituary is the one written in the hearts of those who knew his laugh, his smile, his sense of humor, and his chatty, chummy nature.

Born on April 10th, 1946, Lynn grew up in Benton, Louisiana, and graduated from Benton High School in 1964. He went to college at Louisiana Tech, where he joined the marching band and was president of the marketing club, and graduated in 1968 with a degree in business.

His primary career was his thirty years in pharmaceutical sales, and he was very proud of the fact that, "doctors said I saved lives." Lynn also took great pride in his 38-year military service in the U.S. Army Reserve, which began in 1968 at Fort Humbug in Shreveport, and concluded at a Military Intelligence unit in Austin, before his retirement as a Major in 2006. In his retirement years, he was a substitute teacher at San Antonio's Alamo Heights High School.

Lynn thrived on the companionship of his social groups, his church groups, and his military network. Worth a special mention for him were the groups Single Friends and Single Professionals Network (SPN), and the Alamo Heights Methodist Church, where he was an active member for 34 years. Lynn loved to travel with his friends and family, and he savored the memories of visits to Ireland, London, The Netherlands, Lake Tahoe, and Las Vegas, among the many places he explored in a life packed with travels to the very end.

Over the years he lived in Shreveport, Kansas City, East Texas, Austin, and San Antonio--making friends everywhere he went, and building his own chosen family for life. It was important for Lynn to share his deep gratitude for his closest friends, including Mike Ballentine, Russ and Irene Betts, Robert (Bob) Vance, Dan Spencer, Rick Blasco, Rich Davidson, Daryl Hardman and his cousin, Susan Smith Shaver.

Lynn is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Lynn Carter, Sr., and Rowena Brown Carter, and his brothers, William Bailey Carter and Thomas Stinson Carter. He is survived by his sister, Aleta Naomi Aschwege, niece Julie Ferraro (Jeff Ferraro) and nephew Stinson Carter (Susan Carter), great-nephews Kai Ferraro, Connor Ferraro, and August Carter, and great-niece Theodosia Carter.

In lieu of flowers, it was his wish that any memorial contributions be made to the Louisiana Tech Foundation for the College of Business, or to the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church at 825 Bassie Road, in San Antonio.

It has taken me a long time to write about Lynn. He was the gentlest, kindest person I ever met and I fell in love with him immediately. His humour, his integrity and perseverance were truly something to behold and his love of Family and Friends was evident to anyone who knew him. His quiet demeanor and calm nature belied a quick wit and fierce intelligence; his love and loyalty to Family and Friends was fiercely unfailing, and his calm Grace was an inspiration. He has gone home and truly loved every ride in Life´s Carnival.

Aleta
We are sorry to hear about Lynn's passing but know he is home now. I have so many memories of being at ya'lls house in Benton. When ever we came home we always came to see you and go to Coushatta to catch up on everyone. You and Julie are in our prayers. Lynn use to come by Mom and Dad's when he was close enough to pass by in Bossier (Aunt Betty and Uncle Mac) Please take care Rhonda

What a wonderful testimony to Lynn's unique life. I only saw Lynn a couple of times after our graduation from Benton High School. The last time was at my brother's memorial service in Houston in 2006. Lynn was just as friendly and 'chummy' as always, as though no time had elapsed. And when I spoke to him by phone a couple of weeks ago, I had the same impression. He was a great example of living a full life and fulfilling life. I miss knowing that he's now gone to a different place...

It´s very tough to be writing this. How do you tell in a few words a lifetime of a dear friend and memories. Lifelong friend, classmate and friend to the end. My pastor always said you write your own obituary by the way you live. Lynn sure wrote a good one!
Til we see each other again.

Only treasured fond memories of Lynn. We were in band together in High School and at Tech. Always upbeat and a friend to all.
