Edward Hartnett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 12, 2005.
Edward Patrick (Bud) Hartnett, 96, died Monday, January 10, 2005 at Samaritan Hospital. He was born November 11, 1908 in Troy. He was the son of the late John and Margaret (Maggie) Burke Hartnett, and husband of Alice O'Connor Hartnett who predeceased him on February 15, 2004.

Bud was an avid sportsman in his earlier years. He was employed for many years with Socony Mobil, now known as ExxonMobil Corp. He was the chef on a self propelled oil barge traveling through many ports of the country, especially the Great Lakes area. He was also a union representative during those years.

Bud played a very active role in local politics. He was the Democratic Ward Leader of his beloved 13th ward. He was instrumental in the development of the Central Little League Field and Pavilion in the 13th ward. He also served on the City of Troy Sewer Commission. Bud was honored being inducted into the Troy Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame. He was active in St. Patrick's Men's Club and involved in all of its fundraising efforts for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Tonita A. Berry and devoted, loving son-in-law Joseph Berry of Troy, and Laura A. Sherman and son-in-law A. Jay Bird of Birmingham, Michigan. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jessica Krell Sherman, Andrew Connor Sherman and Dakota Fisher Sherman, all of Michigan. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Stanley Hartnett, two sisters Marion Brady and Corinne Maguire, and one nephew. He leaves behind one nephew, two nieces, and several other family members and friends, in particular his forever devoted friend Bill Walsh.

The funeral for Bud will be held Saturday morning at 8:45am from the Wm. Leahy Funeral Home, 336 Third Street, Troy, and at 9:30am from St. Patrick's Church in Troy. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7pm. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy.

. A special thank you to the administrators and staff at the Van Rensselaer Manor for the loving care and attention Bud received in his time of need. Dear Family, on Monday evening I was at Samaritan Hospital to visit one of my parishioners who was in the same room as Edward. I prayed and anointed him in the Sacrament of the Sick and Dying. I offer you my sincere sympathy at this time and wanted you to know that your father was peaceful. Fr. Burke, Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Latham, NY
