Edward J Jayjack – Veteran, Engineer and Community Leader Edward J. Jayjack, age 89, retired Executive Vice President with Byers Engineering Company died at Parma Community General Hospital's Season of Life Hospice on August 11, 2013. Jayjack's military service was with the 315th Bomb Wing as a B29 bombardier, based on Guam. He and his crew mates, nicknamed Hulcher's Vultures, flew on the last and longest bombing mission over Japan in WWII. Other missions included POW drops after the Japanese surrender. After completing his military service, Ed attended Fenn College and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began his professional career with John Paul Jones, Cary and Millar later bought out by Byers Engineering. He later became a partner with Byers Engineering, and retired as Executive Vice President after 41 years of service. Byers Engineering completed work at the Cleveland Clinic, BP America building, Blossom Music Center, Cleveland State University and the Playhouse Square theaters. Ed was devoted to his family, the community, his faith and his profession. He demonstrated his commitment and leadership within Cleveland State University and the local community. Jayjack served as president of the Engineering Alumni Organization and as an officer of the CSU Alumni Association. He was recognized by the CSU Engineering Alumni as the Outstanding Engineering alumnus in 1992. He served as an instructor for the continuing education program while serving as a member of the Advisory Committee and Student Scholarship Award Committees. Some of his community contributions include serving on the Parma Community General Hospital Board of Trustees and his dedication to the Math Counts program for the Cleveland Society of Professional Engineers. He was a registered professional engineer in three states, a member of Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Association and a member of four technical organizations. He also served as President of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers. Ed was an avid baseball fan, a standout pitcher in fast pitch softball during his military career and later with St. Adalberts as well as coaching his son's baseball teams in the Parma Community. Jayjack was committed to promoting Polish culture. He was an active member and held leadership positions in the Cleveland Society of Poles and the Polonia Foundation. The Cleveland Society of Poles honored him in 1999 as the "Good Joe" at the Polish Heritage Award Banquet. He had been president of the Parma Polish-American League since 1987. He was also a member of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Lincoln Post 13. Jayjack is survived by his wife, Harriet married for 63 years. They are parents of Chris, Ned, Andy, and Ken, ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Family requests donations to Seasons of Life Hospice-Parma, 7007 Powers Blvd. Parma, OH 44129. Prayer service at the funeral home Wednesday, August 14 at 8:15am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 6740 Broadview Road, Parma at 9:00am. Interment following at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Rittman at 11:30am.
