Edward Macmann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 21, 2018 to Jan. 4, 2019.
Ed was born in Brattleboro, Vermont February 12, 1919. As a young man he spent time in Massachusetts and New York City, then joined the Army as a rifleman. He met and married his wife Wilberta Macmann in July 1943 in Barberton, OH, and she followed him to Oak Ridge, TN when he was in the military service there, and then to Los Alamos where he was transferred in November 1945 shortly after the Manhattan Project.
Having a degree in Mechanical Engineering he was quickly put to work in the Los Alamos National Laboratory and stayed there for over 38 years. But his real love always was playing jazz trumpet, and he played with groups in and around Los Alamos for the rest of his life. Well into his late 90s he was still playing dances with the Los Alamos Big Band.
After 72 years of marriage Ed was preceded in death by Wilberta in 2015. Ed is survived by two sons Lloyd Macmann (Linda) and Michael Macmann (Rachel). His cremated ashes will be placed in the United Church's Columbarium and a memorial service will be held at the United Church of Los Alamos sometime after the 2018 holidays.

Ed Macmann was one of the nicest men I knew in Los Alamos. He always had a big smile and a friendly greeting. I met him in 1968 when I joined LASL, where we both worked at the Omega Canyon site. In my second week in Los Alamos, I asked Ed where my family should have lunch on our first weekend visit to Santa Fe. He gave me one of the best suggestions ever when he told me that we must eat at The Shed. We have followed this good advice ever since. At Los Alamos Big Band concerts, Ed was clearly enjoying playing his trumpet. Knowing Ed was a real pleasure. He made other people feel good.
