Memorial service for Edward O. McClurg, Jr., 89, of Nacogdoches will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, June 20, 2019 at Laird Funeral Home with Bro. Don Chumley officiating.
Edward, or “Ed” as he was known by most, was born in Shreveport and raised in Greenwood, Louisiana. He graduated in 1955 from Greenwood High School and went on to attend LSU for a time. He soon realized his talent in automotive mechanics, and capitalized on that, building his career into a lifelong journey. Ed’s search for employment landed him in Nacogdoches, where he remained and called home. In 1965, he met his “Doozy” and the two have spent the last 54 years together. Ed was a simple man and took great pride in his family. He taught them life lessons and made sure to show them how a man was to act, the importance of family, and the love of God. He worked at Gound Chevrolet and eventually became service manager. Although leaving his friends at Gound was a hard decision, his offer to work at Foretravel was an adventure he wanted to explore. Ed was a hard-working man and found this opportunity to fit him well. He remained at Foretravel until he was 65 years old and decided that retirement looked good to him. His remaining years was spent mostly on the farm and with his family. Although he thoroughly enjoyed retirement, he was not a man with idle hands. He had his farm and cattle and spent many hours helping others who needed him including assisting with Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed guns, garage sales, woodworking and made toys and rockers for all who wanted and would enjoy them. Ed’s greatest accomplishment was his children and grandchildren. Having 5 generations brought great joy to him. No one could love them more than he did, except for God Himself. Ed’s devotion to Christ was highly regarded and recognized by all who knew him. He and Frankie spent countless hours volunteering for bible studies, holiday celebrations, and any other activity they could help with. When he could, Ed would meet his buddies at McDonalds for afternoon coffee or Kinfolks for a breakfast filled with laughter and friendly chit chat. Ed’s last days were spent surrounded by family with love and patience and kindness, all of which was taught to them by him.
Ed is survived by his wife, Frankie McClurg of Nacogdoches; sons, Edward O. McClurg III and his wife, Lisa of Dallas, Lewis Wilkerson McClurg and wife, Vickie of Plano; grandchildren: Angel Baxter and husband, Chris of Brewton, AL, Brandy Crisp and husband, David of Nacogdoches, Candace McClurg and husband, David McCasland of Plano, Andrea Jacobs of Rapid City, SD, Kimberly Shapiro and husband, Brad of Plano, David Boatman of Nacogdoches, and Todd McClurg of Fort Worth; great grandchildren: Taylor Figueroa of Plano, Kylie Storjohann of Plano, Haley Dabbs of Rapid City, SD, Peyton Baxter, Tyler Baxter, Jake Crisp, Mac Baxter, Ivy Crisp, Berkley Jacobs, Palmer Jacobs, Kaden McClurg, Paige McClurg, and Kimber Boatman; and great-great grandson, Micah Figueroa, along with other family and close friends who will miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Orlando Sr. and Harriet McClurg, sister, Claire Loveridge, and his daughter, Derinda McClurg Boatman.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mr. Ed’s memory and in honor of his wife, Frankie to The Nacogdoches Treatment Center, 119 Hughes St., Nacogdoches, Texas 75961.
