Edward McHugh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2025.
Edward Richard McHugh III, 67, passed away suddenly on January 31, 2025 while at the casino with his beloved wife Maryann – a place where he always found joy and excitement.

Ed was born and raised in the Town of Poughkeepsie NY. He graduated  in 1975 from Our Lady of Lourdes High School and attended Buffalo State University thereafter. Ed survived the great blizzard of  '77 which swiftly prompted his move to beautiful sunny Southern California. The USPS is where Ed dedicated 30 years of his life before retiring at the age of 59.

To know Ed was to recognize that he was always the sharpest in the room, effortlessly commanding attention with his quick wit and infectious laughter. He was never one to shy away from standing up for what he believed in-whether it was his love for Arnold Palmers, his opinions on politics, or his unmatched collection of Hawaiian shirts. But above all else, Ed's greatest passion was his family. He had a remarkable way of making sure you always felt his unwavering support, whether it was through his presence at important events or his reassuring, steadfast encouragement. If you needed a good laugh, an inside joke, tips on gardening, the latest celebrity gossip, or even a home-cooked rib roast dinner, Ed was the one you could always count on.

Ed was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His quick wit and sense of humor brought joy to everyone around him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Maryann; his son, Bill (Debbie); daughters, Katherine and Meagan (Tom); and numerous grandchildren. Ed is also survived by his mother, Jean, and his six siblings: Richard (Irene), Molly (Javier), Ellen (Bob), Francis, Kathleen (Amy), and Jean. He was predeceased by his father, Ned; his brother, Tim; and his granddaughter, Skylar. Ed will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

So many fond memories of fun and fellowship between the Albrecht and McHugh families over the years! Today I find myself reflecting on Ed's ability to put a smile on your face and his passion for those "days long" Risk games.... He was the master strategist! Our deepest condolences to Ed's entire family. May he rest in peace!

Ed was always such a pleasure to be around - I remember countless days growing up hanging out at the McHugh house with Tim and Ed would join us for fun and laughter. A good person gone too early R.I.P.

Ed and I went through St Mary's, Lourdes and the University of Buffalo together. My favorite memory is freshman year bus rides with him and Leo Clark - two of the funniest people I knew, making the interminable ride home one of fun and laughter. May God rest both of their souls.

Ed was funny, he was very artistic, took piano less9ns for awhile, and was a great athlete. He was always smart and there was nothing that he could not conquer. Ed should have made the Lourdes JV Basketball team Sophomore year.

Wow so many great memories of the McHughs, and the strength received from all those Wappingers family´s. St. Mary´s and CYO basketball were such important foundational experiences. Lisa Freer, who´s was kind enough to marry me 42 years ago was another product of that Lourdes education. I was in Tim´s class at RC Ketchum and have nothing but fond memories. Many of my cherished relationships are connected to my upbringing in Poughkeepsie/Wappingers.
Today I´m still in touch with many of those old friends. From all the (six Brownes) and (nine Freers) please feel the love and support coming your way.

I was lucky enough to grow up with Ed in Wappingers Falls, NY. He was such a quick wit and could always make us laugh. I´m sorry to see he passed because I´m sure he still had many stories to tell. My condolences to the McHugh family.

To all of Ed´s family,
Our family lived around the corner from the McHughs. Our neighborhood was truly like one big family, and I have always thought of the McHughs in that way. I don´t remember not knowing Ed. We went through St.Mary´s together and then all through Lourdes. It was on those bus rides to Lourdes every morning, that Ed would start my day off with a great conversation and more than a million laughs. He was truly one of the best people I have ever known. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. Sending love to you all.

It is with all my sympathies I write this for Ed's family. I was a high school and early college friend. Sadly we have not been in touch for a while but your memorial brings back many memories from playing football right next to Ed on the field, being together in most classes, a few nights out, conversations of life with him and his conversations of life with my parents who trusted him with me. I also had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Ed's parents and siblings, especially Molly, during high school.
Old friends should be cherished because they can know who you are, and they know where you've been. Thank you Frank for reaching out to me. The memorial sounded like Ed was still Ed, and that he gave love to and was loved by all those around him. This is both sad and comforting. I hope it is comforting to your Mom and family. Thank you for giving me that glimpse of my old friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, and Ed.
