EDWARD MICHAELS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 9, 2012.
MICHAELS EDWARD W.
75, of Fawn Twp., died unexpectedly on Thursday, Oct. 4, doing what he loved, tending to his campground. He was born July 2, 1937 in Elmira, NY. Son of the late Warren and Miriam (Savage) Michaels. Mr. Michaels lived most of his life in Fawn Twp. He was a General Manager for Penn Allegheny Coal Company for 30 plus years. A former member of Pitt Golden Panthers and International Blue Grass Musical Association. He was a 1958 University of Pittsburgh graduate and attended Pitt Dental School. He served as Co-Captain of the Pitt Panthers. In 1958, Vince Lombardi personally came to his employer David Tesone to recruit Ed for the Green Bay Packers, Mr. Tesone replied, "Ed already has a job." The media guide from his Sr. year said that Ed never quits, and this was found to be true throughout his life. For those who were close to Ed knew he could always be found working on a project in one of his infamous "green suits." After his retirement, he and his wife Francine organized bluegrass festivals at the site of their log home and campground for 18 years. When the festivals ended, he continued working every day taking care of his campers. He is survived by his beloved wife, Francine R. (Doshen) Michaels; a son, Todd Tesone Michaels of Bonita Springs, FL; a daughter, Donna (Melvin) Bouchat of Saxonburg; granddaughters, Ronda (Vincent) Rodi, Casey Porter, Rachelle Bouchet, and Jamie Porter; and a great-granddaughter, Lola Rodi; also survived by his sister, Laurie Clark of Elmira, NY; and brother, Ken Michaels of Pine City, NY. Relatives and friends were received Mon., Oct. 8 at DUSTER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 347 E. 10th Ave., Tarentum, PA 15084 (724)224-1526. Burial was in Mt. Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of his favorite charities: Salvation Army, Wounded Warriors, or Smile Train. Visit:

I remember Ed as a really nice friend, from grammer school in Elmira. Always wondered where he ended up. He's in my prayers.

Fran and Todd,
I was so sad to see this. I have told many, many people-the two most influential men in my life were my Dad and Ed. I went to work for Ed when a 19 year old kid. When I left Ed I was a man. Talk about tough love--that was Ed. He was as hard on me as any perosn I have ever worked for or with--but I ended up working harder for him than anyone else. The absolute BEST days of my life were at Penn Allegh working for Ed.
I hope he was buried with his beat up white hard hat and pick hammer! I curse myself for not talking to him in recent years--he was larger than life.

I had the pleasure of growing up with Ed in Elmira and we both worked one summer on the old Pennsylvania RR during college summer break. He was a wonderful, caring person, great athlete. My sympathy and prayers to the family.

I am sorry for your loss. I always had a very great time when I was around Ed at the festivals over the years. I will always have fond memories of Ed. Sincerely Junior

So very sorry to hear of your loss. I have fond memories of the Fall weekend in circa 1972 (at age 10) when our Horseheads, NY Merritt family visited Ed and family and then went to a Pitt Panthers game and a Steelers game. Ed was my favorite person in the world that weekend, especially when he introduced us to some of the Pitt Football players, including a Freshman Tony Dorsett.
He was a good man who did alot of nice things for alot of people.
With deepest sympathy,
Steve and Cathy Merritt of Geneseo, NY
