I was so sad to recently hear the news of the sudden loss of Ed O'Connor. I had the pleasure of serving as a volunteer board member for the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers when Ed was the Executive Director. I have fond memories of Ed's grass root support of the Social Work profession, his quiet wit and most of all his musical vocal prowess. His presence will be missed but his spirit continues on.

I had the honor of being President of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers when Ed O'Connor was Executive Director. He always did his very best to support me in my presidency and to advance the social work profession. I enjoyed our many phone conversations, which always began, "Madame President." Ed's political acumen carried our association through a very difficult fight to attain licensure for social workers. Through it all, he maintained a sense of humor and a respect for all involved, even those he disagreed with.

It's great to hear that he moved on to play a role in the lives of so many young women at the school where he taught. It's also nice to hear that he kept singing. He really knew how to put his heart into his voice. That heavenly choir has just gained a good Irish tenor!

I am so very saddened to tears to hear of Ed's death. I knew him well when he was Executive Director at NASW and recall the countless times he was available for advocacy and resources on challenging case and legal matters on behalf of clients. The words fall flat as I write them for they cannot adequately record how dedicated he was.To me, Ed's passing is also the passing of a more vibrant age of grass roots social work when we were all much younger and more hopeful that we could really have an impact. My prayers to the family. he was a wonderful man.

Mr. O'Connor,

We will all miss you terribly, but I'm sure you're up there singing and joking with the angels. They must have seen how awesome you were to us here and wanted you up there! We love you and miss you!

Dear Uncle Ed,

After reading all these entries by the girls you taught, I feel I missed out on getting to know the wonderful man you obviously were to these girls. I'm sorry I didn't get to know you better. I do, however, remember your gift of song which I feel I inherited to some degree. I love you and will miss you.

It was a joy to work with Ed as a volunteer member of the Board of NASW-NJ during the turbulent times trying to pass licensure in the state. His wit and wisdom will be missed by all.

Mr O' Connor,

You were such a caring man that every villa girl, even the ones who did not have you , loved. There is not one person who can honestly say they did not love having you as a teacher. I always looked forward to your class and wished I could have had you another year . My Villa experience would not have the same without you! Thanks for everything , you'll be missed<3

Mr. O'Connor,
I can't really put into words how your sudden death has influenced me, but I can tell you that it has changed me dramatically - making me appreciate my life and everyone in it so much more. I know that'd exactly how you'd want it to be, so I take comfort in that fact. Spending 45 minutes in your class each day this year, I came to know you as a truly caring and wise man. You held such a presence at Villa (and you still do). It is beyond admirable that you didn't wish to "burden" us with the seriousness of your condition - it shows your inner strength and selflessness. Thank you so much for everything. I'll always miss you and I will never forget you. RIP, and enjoy eternity in Heaven. <3

Mr. O'Connor,

You always had such a positive energy about you, even when things seemed to have everyone else in the worst moods. You made every single Villa girl feel at home and happy when they walked into room 111. You had the kindest, gentlest heart anyone could ever imagine. Religion became one of my favorite classes thanks to you, and now I read reality Thursday all the time. We love you, and you will never be forgotten.

Mr. O'Connor,
You were definitely one of the best things I remember at Villa. Everyday, going to your class, you had a way of bringing smiles to our faces regardless of what else was going on. You had a true love for teaching and it showed. I know we will all miss you and remember you as a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend. I'm thinking so fondly of my four years at Villa because of your wonderful spirit. Thank you for blessing Villa with your amazing presence, we will never forget you!

To Ed

Voice of reason
Voice of laughter
Strong voice, clear and true

Sacred voice, blessing and blessed
Now sings with Jesus
With the angels
With the heavenly choir

What a loss
To our Church
To his school
To his family and friends

But free from pain now
Free from cares
Free to lift his lovely voice
To praise God for eternity

May you rest in peace
Always and forever

With love and prayers from

Ed,
I feel particularly blessed because not only did I get to know you as a student, I was able to get to know you as a colleague and friend. You helped inspire me to follow my life's passion: theology. I can never repay you for the support you have given me or the lessons you have shared. In everything I did, you were behind me 100%. I will always cherish our memories together and count myself as lucky to have known you and been inspired by you. God Bless You!

The Elder Brother in the Faith (for Ed O’Connor)

You were adoring Him on your knees
before I was born.
Then into the unknown of religious life,
you spread your cherished faith.

Irish and proud in the best way
with a brother priest as an example,
your parent's virtue would ready your heart.

The world would change
and so would your Church
but as Christ's army would shrink
you would stand strong.

Believing in unbelievable times
you would never deny your holy faith.

With steely resolve,
your songs and laughter
would take care of the tough times
with dignified simplicity.

To have a faith as rich as yours
is the goal of my life.
Your love for Jesus
is a beautiful example for my soul.

If we don't always agree it isn't important.
In Paradise our type of differences won't matter,
then only our love for Christ will remain.

As a brother in the Lord I look to you
for wisdom and you never fail me.
If only all friends could be so sincere.

I love you like the older brother
I've never had
because you've shown me
what a man of God
is meant to be.

Mr. O'Connor,

Words cannot describe how much of an impact you have had on the Villa community. I feel honored to have had the pleasure of seeing your smiling face everyday for the four years I was at Villa. It meant so much to me that you were always at the choir concerts or drama shows to show your support, and even chaperoning the dances with music that probably wasn't to your liking. Villa will definitely be a different place without you around. Thank you for everything you have done for me, both inside and outside of the classroom. You are a true inspiration to us all and will be missed dearly. It's not goodbye, it's see ya later.....RIP Mr. O'Connor

Mr. O'Connor,
There is no way to measure the impact you have had on all of the students you have taught. Through your love of teaching, wisdom, and compassion for all us, you managed to change all of our lives single handedly. Your warm smile is already missed and the hallway seems empty without you. You will always be apart of Villa and you will never be forgetten. "The end does not justify the means"

Mr. O'Connor,
Words cannot describe the pit in my stomach I felt after I heard you had passed away. It was all so strange, because at prom when you were trying to have us all quiet down before we started eating and no one listened at first, but how grateful I was for you to meet my boyfriend and see me at prom - you knew why I had missed so much school these past few years and you were the one particular teacher that wrote me encouraging notes with the work you sent so I could keep up in school. As small as something like a note may sound, I reread them and it made my transition back into school feel so much more secure...especially when I was put in your homeroom. Thank you for checking in with me, especially during my first few hectic weeks back at villa. You always managed to pick up on when I felt like I would never get back into the swing of things, but I did, and your support and care helped carry me all the way through. Thank you, I miss you, and I so much wish I had the courage to have told you this in person. I'm not sure if I can bring myself to say goodbye, so for now, please just keep your eye on us from up there.Sending so much love your way - <3

Mr. O'Connor,
I cannot express in words how much you truly mean to the Villa community. I will never be able to thank you enough for everything you have done for us. From Prom, to Graduation, to the Disney Trip, as well as being the junior theology teacher, you have had a major impact on the past two years of my life. Your amazing voice brings tears to my eyes. It was such an honor to be in your class last year. I learned so much not only about my faith, but about life in general. I will never forget that the end doesn't justify the means. I will be reminded of you every Thursday, which will always be known as Reality Thursdays. You've touched the hearts of every one of your students. You are truly one of the most amazing people I will ever meet. You are completely irreplaceable and I will miss you more than you'll ever know. We love you forever.
P.S. I know you'll be watching down on us and singing with the angels next month at graduation.

I am thankful and grateful for the time we had working together at Villa. Jacqueline and Christina were so blessed to have you as their teacher years ago. You are the most humble and genuine person I have ever had the privilege to meet and I am thankful for that blessing. May 5, 2010

Mr. O'Connor,

It seems like just yesterday that I was sitting in your theology class listening to you read the Reality section of the newspaper, thinking, "this is the best part of my busy day!" You taught me more than the required theology, but gave me the skills to discover who I am as a Catholic woman, and to remember that as I entered the next few phases of my life. You class was meaningful and enlightening, truthful and relevant.

Thank you for being that teacher who has impacted the lives of your students every day you came to class.

Thank you for always being interested in the lives of your students, even after they graduate.

Thank you for your laughter, your gift of song, and your kind heart.

Even though my sisters and I have been at Villa through the many changes that happen over the better part of a decade, I am grateful that we will always have you and your class as a common memory, one we will look back on fondly. As it has been said many times already, VJM will not be the same without you. You will be missed.

As a graduate from Villa Joseph Marie High School, I would like to express my deepest sympathies during this time. Mr. O'Connor made every girl feel special. We always knew that Mr. O'Connor would be on our side and calm us down when we were most upset. Mr. O'Connor,
I can't thank you enough for the encouragement you've given me over the last several years. You were the reason that I became involved with writing for 'reality', a passion that has literally changed the course of my education. You were such a wonderful person, and I was blessed to have been in your class. You've had an amazing impact on all of your students, and you will always remain an integral part of the villa family.

Mr. O'Connor, words can never express how much I will miss you. You were easily one of the greatest teachers I've ever had, and you were the sweetest man ever. I will never forget singing Danny Boy with you, or your beautiful singing voice. The sadness of your passing is devastating. You will always be missed, Mr. O'Connor. I hope you know how much you've touched and affected the lives of every Villa girl who walked into your classroom. I'll always remember you, and I'll always miss you!!

Mr. O'Connor,
You will truly be missed so much. The Villa hallways are not the same without you. You were an amazing teacher; I feel honored to have been one of your students because even though I am not Catholic, you taught me so many valuable life lessons. You have influenced and inspired me in ways you could never imagine. Thank you so much for everything!

Mr. O'Connor,
I know you're probably up there laughing at all of us for making a fuss over you becasue that's just the kind of humor you had, but we just can't help ourselves. You are one of kind. I learned more just listening to what you had to say then I would have ever learned out of a text book. Though I don't completely feel like you're gone because I still feel your warmth and laughter in the hall ways, it is truley our loss. I know your in a better place looking down on us, and I feel so blessed to have known you. Thank you for everything. I'll miss you and always remember you.

Ed, Oh how you will be missed. You will always be here with me in choir at I.C. Your beautiful voice, gentle manner, will be forever in my mind. Everytime I'm here at church I will remember the times your cantored and carried those books down the aisle under your arms. Who is going to teach us the correct way to pronounce the latin words? Until we all meet and sing with the angles. Remembering
you fondly, Marlene Tucci

Mr. O'Connor,
You are your own Villa institution. You fit so well into our little community. I have kept your wisdom with me since I left VJM. I will never forget Reality Section Thursdays or you singing Danny Boy or the time you went up on stage and played the drums during our senior trip in Disney. I have a great respect for you and everything you have done. You will be greatly missed. May angels lead you in.

Words cannot express how much each and every one of us will miss you. You were more than just a fantastic teacher; you were one of the greatest human beings that I have ever met. Your kindness and love for all of your students truly impacted our lives and made us all into better people. You were such an important part of my life at Villa, and I will always hold those fond memories close to my heart. I feel truly blessed to have known you and to have been one of your students. Keep watching over your Villa Jems, we will always love and remember you!

To the Family of Mr. O'Connor:

Your Husband, Father and Grandfather was so instrumental when we were deciding on a high school for our daughter, Shelby. He calmed our apprehensions about not being Catholic, as we were contemplating joining the Villa environment. How glad we are that we followed his insight. He was an amazing Teacher, and truly understood the pressures that the girls faced in their day-to-day lives. There will forever be a "hole" at VJM, but his spirit will carry on. Rest in Peace Mr. O'Connor.

Dear Mr. O' Conner,
I remember many times I spent in your class. You were always a kind and loving teacher. You cared for all who crossed your path. You were there for us whenever we needed you and cared more about us than even yourself. I wish their were more people with your heart an spirit. I am glad to have been one of your first classes. Rest in peace and I will always remember you fondly as I am sure the class of 2004 will as well.

To the Family of Mr. O'Connor,
Two of our daughters, Caroline and Alison, were privileged to have Mr. O’Connor for their teacher at Villa. He not only taught them about religion but he inspired, enlightened, and challenged them. He led by example, with his gentle manner, and devotion to God, his family, and his students. He embodied all that is good, kind and pure in this world. He had an incredible impact on our daughters and we can never repay him for shaping them into the young women that they are today. We will never forget his articulate voice during assemblies, his moving rendition of Danny Boy and his gentle smile. Mr. O’Connor was one of a kind and he leaves a tremendous void in our hearts.

Mr. O'Connor, you were such a wonderful teacher and person who inspired and touched the lives of many, and I am humbled to have been one of your students. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for inspiring the Villa community, and know that you are forever in our hearts. You will be truly missed, but your smile, laughter, inspiration, and love will always be treasured.

To the O'Connor Family,
When we met Mr. O'Connor during Villa's Open house 4 yrs ago, we asked when our daughter would have him as her teacher! In an instant with his humor, smile and warmness, we knew he was one of very few teachers who could still connect with the students in such a kind, understanding and warm way. Villa has lost a one of a kind teacher who will be truly missed by all! You are etched into the hearts of our "girls", the Villa girls! May your journey be as wonderful as you were!

Dear Mr. O'Connor,
You had said that "If you remember nothing else from this class, just always remember 'the end does not justify the means.'" Well, Mr. O'Connor, I did remember that you taught us that; however, you taught us so much more. You taught us, teenagers, that what we say and think truly matters. You taught us through your kindness, humor, and love; you taught us about life. I can never say how much I am grateful that I had you as a theology and homeroom teacher. Thank you so much.

Mr. O'Connor,
Thank you for everything you have done for the students of Villa. You are truly a beautiful person and a wonderful role model to every girl that has had the privilege of being your student. You will forever hold a special place in my heart as well as so many others. May God be with your family during this difficult time.

Mr O'Connor,

Needless to say, the whole Villa community, including myself, will miss you dearly, Mr. O'Connor. You truly were the essence of Villa, and that shined through to the very last days as you were still in the classroom imparting your tremendous wisdom on the girls. The memories that I have of you and with you will stay with me forever. Thank you for being the teacher that I can only hope to become--caring, generous, loving, devoted, smart, and funny, to name a few. Thank you for all that you have given to me, and the hundreds of Villa Jems who will agree that the Villa halls will not be the same without you. I give my deepest sympathy to your family. Thank you for everything.

Mr. O'Connor,
You were one of the greatest teachers that Villa has ever seen. Your sense of humor, caring, and loving nature will be missed forever. You have touched my heart, along with so many others and I can't believe your gone. Its so upsetting that you won't be able to spend the end of our senior year with us, but I know you'll still be watching over us at graduation and Disney...Thank you for everything, you were truly an amazing man.

Mr. O'Connor,
You may have never known the difference you made for everyone you knew, but we all knew how special you were. Seeing how much you have impacted mine and my sisters’ experience at Villa shows how much you cared about what you did. I don’t think there is a Villa girl that hasn’t learned a great deal from you about our life, our faith, and ourselves. The end doesn’t always justify the means. You are the heart of Villa…keep watch over all of us.

Mr. O'Connor - whether it was the amazing discussions during Reality Thursdays, or you being the voice of reason for our class, you always pushed us and taught us in the most loving way possible. You were such a wonderful example to all, and you never ceased to let the love that you had for your students shine in every aspect of your classroom and your life. I'll never forget you and am grateful to have had you as a teacher. No one will be able to sing "Danny Boy" like you...

Mr. O'Connor,I will always cherish your joy which was implicit not only for your students but to your family as well. You were someone who taught the teachings of their class through who you were and your values of faith, hope and love. I remember being one of your first classes at Villa and how adorable you were by how excited you got to be teaching again. All of your junior year classes competed for which class you liked better. You were one of those rare teachers who you never wanted to let down. Whenever I think of my fondest memories at Villa, I will think of you. Miss you!

Mr. O'Connor, to say you will be missed is a huge understatement. You were not only caring, smart, and funny, but you were one of the greatest people I ever had the pleasure of knowing. You were not only a teacher, but you were a friend. I will always remember your laugh, your singing voice, and all of the times you read us the newspaper. Thank you for being such a large influence on my life and on the lives of every student lucky enough to have you as a teacher. Heaven got an amazing angel when you passed away. You will always be loved, remembered, and missed.

To the family of Mr O'Connor

What a tragic loss - this wonderful loving devoted man was a symbol of kindness and gentility, he will be missed by all who knew him. My fondest memory of Mr O'Connor was last year when he so beautifully sang Oh Danny Boy at Villa - I had no idea how beautiful his voice was. Our school halls will be empty without his wisdom, kindness and genuine love of the girls. May his family always know and remember how special and important he was to our school. Our deepest and sincere sympathy to his family

Mr. O'Connor,

I still can't believe you're gone, but I know you are still watching out for us from heaven. You had such a positive impact on all of us as we grew as young women throughout some of the toughest times of our lives. The memories we all have with you are irreplaceable and will remain close to us every time we think of our high school years. I wish we could have one more coffee and paper together before class, you made all the difference in the world for many of us. You are missed and loved by all of your Villa girls.
