Edward OFFICIA Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 28 to Jul. 30, 2018.
Edward "Ed" "Eddie" Officia , 87, passed away on May 12, 2018 at his home in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is survived by his sisters Marlene, Carollyne, Louisa, and sister-in-law Diane, all of British Columbia, numerous nieces and nephews across Canada, and his long-time friend and companion, Mary Byron of Halifax. He was predeceased by brother Sig and sister Sue.

Ed was born in Lachine, Quebec, in 1931, the oldest of the 6 children of Louis and Julia Officia. Ed spent his early years in Montreal, attending Montreal West High School, then McGill University. When his family moved to Vancouver in 1952, he remained in Montreal employed by Russell Hipwell Ltd. for many years. He then lived in Toronto briefly before settling in Halifax in 1968. There he joined the Aquatron Laboratory at Dalhousie University's Department of Oceanography, which he supervised until his retirement.

A very private man, Ed was gifted with the qualities of loyalty, a very quick wit and a probing intellect. His interest in the world and the human condition was obvious to all. He was a reader and a writer who would send engaging letters to his family on the West Coast loaded with his unique brand of satire. He enjoyed a lively discussion, particularly when accompanied with a glass of fine wine. Ed's love of all things mechanical guided his life's work. If there was something that needed fixing, Ed was the one to take care of it.

Ed will be missed by all his family and many friends including the Conrad family, Mark Merriman and his Texas Hold'em poker pals.

At Ed's request there will be no funeral or memorial service held. In lieu of flowers, if desired, a donation may be made in his memory to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice. On-line condolences may be sent to the guest book at www.legacy.com.
