Edward Parkhurst Obituary

New London, NH-Edward C. Parkhurst, M.D., 81, of New London, NH, formerly of Winchester, MA died of complications of a stroke on Jan. 25, 2004.

Dr. Parkhurst was a Urologist at Massachusetts General Hospital for 34 years and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He was Past President of the New England Section of the American Urological Association.

He and his wife, Anne, moved to New London in 1989 where he was a Urologist at Dartmouth Medical Center and Assisitant Professor of Surgery at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Parkhurst held hospital staff appointments at Martha's Vineyard Hospital, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, Winchester Hospital, Mount Monadnock Hospital in Peterborough, NH and Veteran's Administration Hospital in White River Junction, VT.

Dr. Parkhurst as born and raised in Beverly, MA and graduated from Beverly High School, Deerfield Academy, Amherst College and University of Rochester Medical School. He trained in Surgery at The Rhode Island Hospital and in Urology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He was proud of his service in the US Navy. He served as a Flight Navigator during WWII and was active in the Reserves until 1982. He retired as a Commander, US Navy.

He had a passion for protecting the environment. He conserved land in Northern Maine and NH. He served on the New London Conservation Commission, was President of the Little Lake Sunapee Protective Association and Director of Lake Sunapee Protective Association. Dr. Parkhurst had a strong interest in community service. He served as Director of the Winchester Savings Bank and President and Director of Mount Vernon House in Winchester, MA.

He was an avid pilot from the age of sixteeen. For years he flew his Cessna to Martha's Vineyard to provide urologic care there.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Anne and four stepsons and their families. Robert L. Swanson, Jr. of Winchester, MA, Richard S. Swanson, M.D. of Westwood, MA, Kirk W. Swanson of Hamilton, MA and Scott J. Swanson, M.D. of Old Greenwich, CT, daughter, Susan E. Parkhurst and her husband of Danville, CA and son, J. Michael Parkhurst and family of Topsfield, MA. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Gould Road, New London, NH on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at 2:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to the New London Conservation Commission, P.O. Box 240, New London, NH 03257.

Dr. Parkhurst was a revered teacher and a great friend to me during my Urology training at the MGH. We shared a special bond because we both had ties to Beverly, MA. I often recall his generosity, warmth, and sense of humor. My thoughts are with his family. Thanks for sharing him with us for all those years.
