Edward Harold "Spring" Springmeyer

SHREVEPORT, LA- A memorial service celebrating the life of E. Harold "Spring" Springmeyer will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport. Officiating will be Dr. Robert Shelton and Reverend Bryan McDowell. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2007, at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home.

Spring passed away on the morning of Wednesday, November 28, 2007. Born December 23, 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri, he attended the University of Missouri, but spent his last 43 years in Shreveport. An active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport, where Spring served as elder, he could always be counted upon to participate in a variety of activities, befriending many church members. A loyal patriot, Spring served in the U.S. Marines during WWII where he was engaged in the battle of "Tarawa", marking America's first major offensive in the Pacific. A member of The Shreveport Club, Shreveport Country Club and Pierremont Oaks, he also served as Captain of the ROJ's for the Cotillion Club. Dedicating the majority of his career with Armco Steel Company, most recently Spring was involved in the printing business with M.L. Bath.

Throughout his life Spring loved baseball, a passion that began in his younger years when he spent time watching the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team through the knotholes of Sportsman's Park. Spring instilled his love through coaching youth baseball and was an avid fan of Loyola baseball. His days at "Mizzou" were a source of joy and fond memories including serving as President of Kappa Sigma and hanging out at the "Shack". Spring's signature humility, kindness, and gentle personality will surely be missed by all who knew him.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, Beverly; two sons, Dr. Craig Springmeyer and Alice of Shreveport and Jeff Springmeyer and Amie of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Jeff Springmeyer of Shreveport, Ryan Springmeyer and wife, Courtnay and Reid, Ashley and Robby Springmeyer of Houston, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Tom Bullock, Cliff Burgess, Milton Chapman, Norman Clayton, Ken Francis, John Guth, Roy Hurley, J. Hugh Watson and Ed Wilkey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Reid Springmeyer, Ryan Springmeyer, Jeff Springmeyer & Robby Springmeyer.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport, Providence House or a charity of your choice. Rose-Neath Funeral Home

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Edward Harold (Spring) Springmeyer our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Spring. And to Spring it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Spring we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,355 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Spring’s family and loved ones.
