Edward Walker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 30, 2006.
Edward B. Walker, III died on April 28, 2006 at the age of 84. (Note: The following was written in 2006 by the deceased.) My primary focus and concern in life has always been my family. First, I was most fortunate to have loving, caring parents, Mary Ray Walker and Edward B. Walker, Jr. Both were highly educated and always encouraged me to get a good education, even at some sacrifice to them. The best and most important decision of my life was to marry Katherine (Kay) Evelyn Miller, a Registered Nurse and Registered Medical Librarian. We were both working for a Gulf Oil subsidiary in Venezuela at the time. Kay has been a wonderful wife and played a most important part in my life. She has also been an ideal mother for our two sons. Our two sons, Edward Bullock Walker and Richard Miller Walker have brought a lot of joy to my life and have been of great comfort to Kay and me as we grow older. I am proud of our two grandchildren, Travis Austin Walker and Westin Miller Walker, who are currently getting a good education. Travis is in college and Westin will enter college next fall. As an only child, my cousins and their families have always been an important part of my life. It is customary to have a biographical sketch in obituaries. I will spare the reader many of the boring details one frequently sees. I graduated from the Boston Latin School, then entered MIT, from which I received bachelor's and master's degrees. My university education was interrupted by service in the US Army, which awarded me two decorations for heroic achievement in action in France and Germany. After finishing at MIT, The Gulf Oil Corporation hired me to work in Venezuela. My whole career was spent with Gulf, from which I retired as President and a director. My public service was devoted largely to education. I served on boards or committees at MIT, Harvard, University of Texas, Denver University, and other universities and educational organizations. My love goes to all who survive me. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, with Dr. James Moore officiating. A reception will follow. The church is located at 3471 Westheimer, Houston, TX 77027. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the charity of choice.

I was introduced to Ed in Denver by his oldest son Edward. I immediately knew I was in the presence of a great man. He carried himself as a true gentleman, spoke softly and wisely. He also carried these attributes onto the golf course. I was lucky enough to play the wonderful Cherry Hills golf course with Ed, Kay and Edward. It was a great day and I think of it ofen. I admired Ed for his activity level. It was great to hear that he went skiing just last year at the age of 83. That feat itself shows what a remarkable man he was. His leadership, compassion and good nature will surely be missed.

Ed Walker demonstrated his love of Venezuela by his assimilation to the Venezuelan people, and by his professionalism. He was a man of noble character and his greatness was defined by his humility. We extend to his wife Kay and his family our deepest condolences at their lose of this kind giant, who helped Venezuela in its oil development, in years past.

As a long time friend of Mr. Walker's son Ed4, I had the pleasure of spending time with both father and son. I marveled and enjoyed the true interest Mr. Walker took in the independent pursuits of his son and his friends. He enthusiastically embraced the sport of Windsurfing and the technical challenges of the construction and manufacture of this new sports equipment in its early development years. In this spirit his genuine curiosity and support for the young people around him trying to make their way in this world was a true breath of fresh air and a tremendous vote of confidence. I will always remember his kindness and this helping hand in my life. He was a fine gentleman and will be missed.

We had many great times together. I will always remember Ed's love for Dungeness crab and bringing it to Steamboat when we would visit them in the Fall. He was a great man and we will miss him.

Our whole family mourns the loss of Uncle Ed, but we are thankful for knowing him. Right to his end, he modelled caring, determination and dignity. He and Aunt Katherine have set the bar high for the rest of us to follow. We send our love and prayers to our family in Texas.

Edward Walker was a wonderful human being, gentle and kind to all he touched. My memory of him is as a young, tall geologist, seemingly all legs and boots, whom I shared a bachelor quarter with in San Tome in the Spring of 1950. May he rest in God's peace.

It was an honor for me to have walked for ten years in the shadow of such a fine person as Edward B. Walker, III. To know Ed was to know his family, and that was another honor for me. My thoughts reach out to Kay, Edward, Richard, Travis, and Westin at this sad time. I thank the Walker family for the many kindnesses to Jim and me over the years and for warm memories that I cherish.

My husband and I were able to really get to know the Walker's (through my parents) while living in Colorado. Mr. Walker was such a fun, nice, and interesting person to talk to and a very good listener. He was the salt of the earth and will be missed. Heaven is lucky!

Ed III was one of the most inspiring individulas I have ever known. Smart, tough, caring, humorus, compassionate. A true "One of a kind" I was lucky to have known him, but more importantly my 3 children latched on to Uncle Ed and Aunt Katherine and learned amazing things and were inspired to learn more. Katherine and Ed, amazing Chemistry! Ed's passing is a very very sad loss to all of us. However, Ed will continue to inspire the next generation due to his core values. What a wonderful tribute to ones passing, you have the next generation willingly inspired to emulate your qualities. Ed III, will be be long remembered!!!
