Published by The Newport Daily News on Apr. 18, 2015.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Rev. Edward S. Winsor, age 85, died on Friday, April 10, 2015 at his home in Ft. Myers, FL. He was the husband of Jean Fowler Winsor.
Ed was born on August 28, 1929 in Providence, RI to Edward and Mary Stiness Winsor.
Ed graduated from Dartmouth College, received his Master's Degree from Columbia University and his Bachelor of Sacred Theology from Yale Divinity School at Berkley. Ed was Rector of St. Columba's Berkley Memorial Chapel in Middletown, RI for twenty-five years.
He was a reserve Air Force Chaplain for twenty-eight years, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. Ed taught political science at the Naval War College, URI and RIC.
He was past president of New Visions for Newport County in the late 1960's, and Commodore of the Newport Yacht Club from 1974-75 and Club Chaplain.
Ed had a passion for Jean, sailing, politics and the church. He and Jean, avid sailors from childhood, retired to live aboard their sloop Retreat and cruised from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas, settling in the Florida Keys where Ed was in charge of three parishes. Ed and Jean moved to Ft. Myers eleven years ago, settling in a community with their longtime sailing friends from Newport.
Ed leaves behind his wife Jean, his sister Anne Doskow in CA, daughter Susan and her children Gordon, Amy-Elizabeth and Sarah; son Frank, his wife Theresa and their children Andrew and Daniel; daughter Elizabeth and her son Samuel Slesinger; son Gregory, his wife Barbara and their children Meredith, Mitchell and Maxwell; great- grandchildren Nathin Johnson, Mylee Santos and Abigail Winsor.
Funeral Services to be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ft. Myer, today, April 18, 2015. A memorial service will be held in Newport this summer at St. Columba's Berkley Memorial Chapel.
Ed was known amongst clergy as the priest most likely to be found "on Retreat".
