Edwin G. Devine

Edwin G. Devine, 86, of West Hartford, CT died Saturday (September 26, 2015) at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Dolores R. Devine in 1999. Ed was born in Manhattan, NY to Edwin J. and Gertrude M. Devine. He graduated from St. Raymond's School and Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx and from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in NYC. His career as a mechanical engineer took him from Manhattan to Wellsville, NY and finally to CT where he retired from Combustion Engineering in 1985. After his retirement, Ed volunteered for the Town of West Hartford's "Medical Escorts," driving elderly residents to and from their medical appointments. Ed also devoted over 3 years to caring for his beloved wife following her massive stroke. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church and was always grateful for his "parish family." Ed was a man of exceptional integrity and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was loving, loyal, generous in every way, intelligent and such fun to be with. Ed is survived by his daughter/best friend, Lorrie Devine of West Hartford, and her companion, Stephen Hedges, also of West Hartford; his sister, Jean Burger of NY; his brother, John Devine and his wife Bonna, of Texas; his cousin, John J. Dignus of Long Island; and several nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Mick Miller in MA for corresponding with "Uncle Ed" each week. He was predeceased by his sister, Miriam Caulfield and his brothers-in-law, Francis Caulfield and William Burger. Ed's daughter wishes to thank the wonderful staff at St. Francis Hospital and Masonicare for the compassionate care and support they provided to them during Ed's brief time in the hospital. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 3, 2015 with a procession at 11:30 AM from Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main St., West Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 12 Noon at Holy Trinity Church in Hartford. Family and friends will be received at the funeral home Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be private at a later date.
