Edwin Morrell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 3, 2018.
1929 ~ 2017
Edwin Blackhurst Morrell passed away peacefully following a stroke on December 31, 2017 in Provo, Utah. He was born in Worland, Wyoming on February 9, 1929 to William Ernest Morrell and Margaret Blackhurst Morrell Bird. He and his older siblings, Eleanor Morrell Balls and Grant Morrell, were raised in Salt Lake City by their beloved mother with the help of their grandmother, Mae Blackhurst.
Ed graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah, where he chose to study Russian as his foreign language, before being called to serve a mission to Czechoslovakia in 1948. Before leaving Salt Lake City, he was invited to eat dinner with the parents of his mission president, Wallace Toronto. There he met Wallace's sister, Norma Toronto, who was to become his wife.
Ed and his fellow missionaries were expelled from Czechoslovakia by the Communist government, and Ed completed his missionary service in England. His experience in Czechoslovakia as a young missionary proved to be a pivotal experience in his life, leading to a PhD from Harvard in Russian Studies and a career at Brigham Young University as a Political Science professor, specializing in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
After returning to Salt Lake City in 1954, following his mission and military service in Germany, Ed reconnected with Norma Toronto. They were married three months later in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, on September 10, 1954.
Norma and Ed loved to travel together, especially while engaged in church service. They served two times as mission president and mission mother, first from 1981-84 in the East European and Austria Vienna Missions and then from 1996-98 in the Czech Prague Mission. They were perfect companions; Ed was talented with languages, and Norma communicated with love. Ed treasured his opportunities to serve in the church. Most recently he served as a sealer in the Provo Temple.
Ed is survived by his sister, Eleanor Balls; his daughters, Ann (Ryan) Thomas, Barbara Morrell, Kathleen (Dave) Lynch, Susan (Scott) Cherry, and Betsy (Lance) Redford; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Norma, their daughter, Christine Morrell and their grandsons, Sean Thomas and Mitchell Cherry.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Provo Peak 2nd Ward Building, 965 N. Locust Lane, Provo, UT. Viewings will be at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center St., Provo, UT on Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 6- 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10- 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at www.bergmortuary.com.

He was a kind and wise mentor during my studies at BYU. His offspring can be justly proud of him, for his intellectual achievements, for his rock solid faith and for his selfless service.

Dr. Morrell was a wonderful mentor and guide throughout my degree seeking days and in our semester in Salzburg in 1966 and in guiding this student toward his degree so long ago.. Many many thanks to a wise and effective teacher, advisor and friend. He left a positive and memorable mark in many of our hearts.

Dr. and Sis. Morrell were directors on our Study Abroad in Vienna in 1987. They were both such wonderful people and we got to know Betsy while in Vienna and at BYU. Dr. Morrell was so knowledgeable about European politics and I learned a lot. I send my love to his family.

Dear President and Sister Morrell's Family,
We are very grateful for the time, which we could spend with President and Sister Morrell. We remember them often, and especially in these days. We could always feel their love and faith in Jesus Christ.
I (Radovan) met them for the first time on 16 May 1981 in Brno, Czechoslovakia (the same day I was baptized). They arrived from Brno, where President Morrell served as the mission president. And he was asked to supervise the Church also in Czechoslovakia. I still feel the Spirit, which they brought to the Church meeting held in family Vojkuvka's home and it has been an unforgettable experience to be with them. And since that time many other unforgettable experiences followed.
President Morrell did much for members of the Church even during communism, first of all by his personal visits. But he also at that time arranged the reprint of the Book of Mormon and The Articles of Faith written by Elder Talmage. He also arranged the printing in Czech for the first time of the Doctrine and Covenants, Gospel Principles and the Hymnbook with about 80 hymns. These books were very helpful.
When President Morrell was called with Sister Morrell as the mission mother to preside our mission, we were very happy. They influenced our lives; they influenced many lives for good in our mission. President Morrell made every effort to move the work of our Lord in our Czech Prague Mission forward.
My wife and I love President and Sister Morrell. We could feel in their presence that we are a part of their family. We could feel that they are angels sent from heaven to help us. And we are grateful to our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ for the knowledge that we will meet President and Sister Morrell, our dear friends, again.

I was blessed to have Ed Morrell as a professor in my first class, first day of college, over 40 years. I'll never forget his simple teaching style and kind mannerisms. He gave me the confidence I needed to excel and seek truth. I admired him greatly.

President and Sister Morrell were my mission presidents during their second stint as mission presidents! They loved serving. In the years since then, it has been a joy to stay in touch. President Morrell remembered and loved his missionaries. What a great example of service and love!

President Morrell set me apart as a missionary he was the only high priest in the country ordained to do that at the time. I loved how he always insisted we spoke in Czech while I tried to insist on English. He won every time. The Morrells were the best example of an eternal couple. My condolences to the family.

President Morrell was my mission president. He was a strong leader with a solid belief in Jesus Christ. I will always remember how much he missed Sister Morrell when she took ill and left the mission early. He was "trunkier" than the missionaries who were about to go home. To me, he was a strong, solid man, in stature and character. But if I asked him about Sister Morrell, he would melt like a teenage boy thinking about his girl. I can't help but think of how sweet that reunion must have been. Thank you, to his family, for lending him to us for a short time. May you be comforted in the knowledge that you will be together again.

Ed was my mission president. What a great example of faith! I always enjoyed our zone conferences on the mission to see him and Norma give so much to the people of the Czech and Slovak Republics that they loved so dear. Condolences to his family on the passing of a marvelous man!

Pres. Morrell was a great mentor, leader, and friend. As one of his missionaries in the Czech Prague Mission, I loved how he helped me to reach my goals, try harder, and to see the best in people. We were truly blessed because of his service.
