Edwin Sheffield

Sheffield Edwin Cummings Sheffield Sr., 70, died March 29, 2012, at his home. Eddie was a retired high school science, chemistry, and physics teacher, having taught 40 years. He began teaching at Rich Valley High School, taught at Patrick Henry High, and then spent most of his career at Abingdon High School. He was a graduate of R.B. Worthy High School, Emory & Henry College, and the University of Virginia. He was a member of Byars-Cobbs Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as choir director for many years. He cared deeply for his church and gave joyfully of his time and talents. Survivors include his wife of nearly 46 years, Doris Ann Owens Sheffield; two children, Edwin C. Sheffield, Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Christiansburg, and Elizabeth Ann Belcher and husband, Richard, of Meadowview; the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Katrina Sheffield, Edwin C. Sheffield, III, Holden Belcher, and Sofia Belcher; a loving babysitter for Holden and Sofia; one brother, David Sheffield and wife, Beth, of Port Royal, and brother-in-law, Dayton Owens and wife, Gladys, of Glade Spring; his uncle and aunt, John and Ruth Sheffield; his uncle, Walter W. Ridgway; his stepmother, Lottie Sheffield; and loving nieces and nephews, Lee Anne Lester, Michael Sheffield, Matt Sheffield, Cheryl Buchanan, and Ricky Owens, and several cousins. A graveside service was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Griffith and the Rev. Tom Sullivan officiating. Serving pallbearers were Michael Sheffield, Matt Sheffield, Bryan Buchanan, Brandon Lester, Charles Byrd, and Tony Surber. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church organ fund, P.O. Box 667, Glade Spring, and/or Seven Springs Presbyterian Church building fund, P.O. Box 876, Glade Spring. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family received friends at Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church immediately following the graveside service.
