May 10, 1937 - July 21, 2025
Edwin John "Sonny" Sprague, age 88, of
Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025. Born on May 10, 1937, Sonny was the beloved son of the late Carmen Fosgate (née Karnowski). He grew up in Toledo and attended Whitmer High School.
Sonny proudly served his country in the Army Reserve for 8 years. A hard worker with a strong sense of duty, he carried that discipline and dedication into every aspect of his life.
Sonny was a skilled tradesman who began his career in brick and concrete work. Later he proudly earned his degree in mechanical engineering, retiring from a management role at Dana Corporation. He was known for his strong work ethic, sharp mind, and steady leadership.
Sonny dedicated many years to coaching youth football for the Washington Junior Football League, where he also served on the commissioner's staff. He was a positive influence on countless young athletes and remained a respected member of the local sports community.
A true racing enthusiast, Sonny loved NASCAR and spent time on the sprint car circuit as part of a pit crew-always happiest when surrounded by engines, speed, and teamwork. His passions brought him joy and lifelong friendships.
A gentle soul, Sonny was a huge animal lover. Over the years, he shared his home with many beloved dogs and cats and was known for rescuing injured or abandoned wildlife whenever he could. His compassion extended to all creatures, great and small.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, June, with whom he shared many cherished moments-especially their trips to Arizona, Florida, and Hawaii, leisurely days of fishing, playing cards, and enjoying many puzzles and games together.
Sonny was a proud and loving father to David (Sherri) Sprague, Tina (Ty) Wumer, and Danny (Melissa) Sprague, and a caring stepfather to Kelly Wietrzykowski and Mark (Angie) Wietrzykowski.
He was the cherished grandpa of Brittani (Nick Hastin) Sprague, JD (Jessica) Sprague, Taylor (Joshua) Vandegrift, Kayla (Ricky) Aguilar, Kelsey Wumer, and Casey Wumer, Katie (Colin) Boerst, Alek Wietrzykowski, and Bailey Wietrzykowski; and great-grandpa to Henry and Lucy Boerst.
Sonny is also survived by his loving sisters: Joan (Bill) Miller, Shirley Wagner, and Sandy (Bob) Wagner; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carmen Fosgate; his infant daughter, Theresa; and his brothers-in-law, James Wagner and Gordon Winder.
To know Sonny was to love him. His kindness, sense of humor and warm spirit touched everyone he met. His children feel incredibly blessed to have had a dad who truly enjoyed life-who sought out fun, embraced adventure, and taught them the value of living fully and joyfully. His laughter and light-hearted spirit will live on in their hearts forever.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Sonny generously chose to donate his body to science, continuing his legacy of giving and helping others. The family would like to thank the healthcare providers at The Toledo Hospital and Hospice of NWO for their kindness and care.
He will be remembered with deep love, admiration, and gratitude by all who had the honor of knowing him.
