Elaine Berkman Obituary

Published by Nanaimo Daily News from Jul. 9 to Jul. 11, 2014.
BERKMAN, Elaine March 9, 1929 - July 6, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elaine Berkman. She was predeceased by her daughter Merle Ger, and loving husband Hymie Berkman. She is survived by her son Alan (Jola) Berkman, her daughter Tessa Goldberg, and her 5 grandchildren Russell Ger, Caryn Ger, Amy Goldberg, Benjamin Berkman and Danielle Berkman. Elaine lived a full life. She was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She was a singer and met Hymie during her first performance in Cape Town. The married in 1950 in Cape Town. After the birth of her children she completed the Performers's Diploma in Opera and sang with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. She had lead roles, amongst other; in The Merry Widow, La Traviata, The King and I, The Sound of Music and Don Giovanni. Elaine and Hymie moved to Israel in 1988. Elaine moved to Nanaimo after Hymie's passing to be closer to her children. She played bridge a few times per week (and was always very proud of her "winnings"), and led an active social life. She was an active member of the Central Island Jewish Society, and greatly enjoyed attending The Philosophers Cafe. Elaine will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and friends. She will always be in our hearts. Funeral service will be on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 1pm at the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, Cedar Road. There will be a small reception after the service at 6330 Corfu Drive, Nanaimo. Prayers (Shiva) will be at 5:30pm at the same address. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Diabetic Society.
