Elaine Harley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2024.
We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Elaine Cox Harley. Elaine passed peacefully on 8/23/2024 with loved ones by her side.

Elaine was born on 9/12/1934 in Gresham, Oregon. Her family moved to and settled in Yachats when Elaine was a young girl. She remembered riding horses on the beach from Yachats to Waldport with her girlfriends. Her dad, Ernie taught her how to drive on the beach in an old Army truck.

Elaine graduated from Waldport High School in 1952. Following high school she moved to Portland where she attended business school. While there she attended American Legion dances where she met her first husband Bob Rumery. They married and had two children, Kristie and Steve.

She spent two years in Germany while Bob was stationed there. She loved her time in Germany learning about it's culture.

In 1968 she married her loving husband, Bert Harley in the Little Log Church in Yachats. She and Bert celebrated 54 years of marriage before his passing in 2022.

Elaine was a very loving, caring and determined woman who's passion was her family and her chosen career of nursing. After working in the Waldport Doctor's office for many years, in 1979 when Elaine was 45 she knew she wanted to become a nurse and attended Linn Benton Community College and received her Associates Degree. In 1995, at the age of 61 she attended Portland State University and completed her Bachelors Degree in Nursing. She proved it's never too late to learn anything if you have the determination.

In nursing, Elaine had a busy and fulfilling career. She worked for Toledo and Newport Hospitals, Home Health and Hospice. She was instrumental in starting the Yachats Community Clinic and running it for several years. She also was part of starting the assisted living community, Sea Aire which she was very proud of. She served as it's administrator and RN for the facility. She loved the work there as well as the people she worked with. After that she taught the Nursing Program Skills Lab at Oregon Coast Community College, finally retiring at the age of 80!

She also served as Parish Nurse for the Yachats Presbyterian Church where she was a member for many years.

In addition to her parents, Elaine was predeceased by her husband Bert, her two brothers Greg Cox and Chuck Cox, her daughter Kristie Nestor and her son-in-law, Jon Nestor. She is survived by her son Steve (Jean), granddaughter Sadie(Trevor),

grandson Ben(Haleigh) and great-grandchildren, Harper, Clayton and Nolan.

Services will be held Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 1:00pm at Yachats Presbyterian Church. Donations to Sea Aire Assisted living in Yachats.

Oh I loved working with Elaine back in the late 80s in the old hospital (the one built in the 50's). We worked ICU together and she was such a wonderful coworker! In her later years, always a blessing to see her and catch up on the happenings of life. Elaine definitely made a positive difference in the world!

Elaine was a force of nature! She recruited me to help her during the county fair. The Lions Club had a big motor home that had several checkup stations set up. . I took blood pressure, Elaine did hearing tests, and two other people did "something." We had a short time without visitors, so we gave each other hearing tests and laughed a lot. I liked that we could argue, but she would still give me a hug when we saw each other. Elaine will be missed.

My memory of Elaine is how she "stayed up with" everyone in Yachats community and would discreetly share what she could. Her caring sprit was demonstrated in their final years for husband Bert & son-in-law Jon Nestor!

Prayers for Elaine´s family. I knew her for a very long time! I remember her at the doctor office way back in the day. However, my older sister Tina and Kristie were great friends and I remember that very well. Elaine always asked how everyone was whenever I ran into her and she always has a smile.

I remember Elaine as being kind, compassionate and highly intelligent. We would always laugh and enjoy life when we were together. It was an honor to know her. Sending condolences to her family.

Elaine´s natural nursing ability made her was like a mom to everyone she met, caring about their well-being. Those caring for her later in life were often asked, "Are you doing okay?" She listened to a person´s problems and when she said she would pray, she did! She laughed at hard things-something she said her parents taught her that helped them get through struggles. It was a privilege to have known her and to have been influenced by her.

I am so sorry that my husband and I will not be able to attend the services for Elaine as we will be in another area of the state.. She and Bert were such good friends from Yachats Lions Club. They were both true examples of true Lions and examples to all of us on living a great life,
