Elaine Stensrud Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 8, 2024.
It is with heavy hearts that we share Elaine Marie Stensrud of Portland, OR passed away September 15, 2024.

Elaine was born September 12, 1952 in Portland, OR to parents: Harold and Theresa Stensrud (Van Orsow.) Her family moved to Hermiston, OR when she was still a toddler, where her parents raised her and her four younger siblings. Elaine took her role of being the oldest seriously and served as a protector for her brothers ensuring their safety from neighborhood bullies. She developed an appreciation and talent for cooking from her mother, and she prepared and shared some of her mother's recipes with her siblings, daughter, nieces, and nephew. This passion followed her into adulthood and led to her finding and tweaking her own favorite recipes often prepared for family at holidays and so delicious they will be passed down to future generations, though it won't be the same knowing it wasn't cooked or baked by her.

Another passion and admired trait Elaine learned from growing up with her family in Hermiston was her strong work ethic and desire to help others through the career she chose. After graduating from Hermiston High School in 1970, Elaine took a few classes at Blue Mountain Community College before entering the working world. In Hermiston, she worked as a personal income tax preparer and sold bookkeeping and check writing systems. Elaine moved back to Portland in 1987 and started her own freelance bookkeeping small business, which she actively maintained up to her death. She enjoyed her work as it kept her mind challenged, and she knew the service she provided to her clients was valued and so very appreciated. She had several original clients stay with her to the very end, and their loyalty was a testament to the exceptional level of service she remained committed to providing. Apparent from sentiments shared by her clients, the relationships she nurtured with them went beyond business and became lifelong, meaningful friendships.

Of the utmost importance to Elaine were her daughter, Lindsay, her grandson, Rowan, and her furry feline companion, Rocky. Elaine was the epitome of a fun mom hosting numerous sleepovers for Lindsay and pouring extensive energy and creativity into Lindsay's birthday parties to make them special. She was Lindsay's 4H group leader, and she made learning a joyous experience for Lindsay and her friends. They learned so much from her, and her impact went above and beyond as she was an example of a strong, compassionate, and loving mentor. Elaine and Lindsay had many moments of friendship throughout Lindsay's life. They did the girlie things like getting their hair done together, and they both knew how to bring out the goofy side in each other which made for lots of genuine laughter. Elaine always supported her daughter's interests, no matter how ambitious or unique the interest may be, and she was there for Lindsay during the tougher life lessons. In fact, she was always there. Elaine was good at reminding her daughter and grandson how much she loved them, and this love was evident in how often she spoke of them to family, friends, and clients. Her home was filled with photos from her adventures with family and close friends. Elaine's legacy will live on in the memories of her daughter, family, and friends who were lucky to know such a good friend and fortunate to spend time having fun, laughing, and adventuring with her.

Elaine's hobbies included volunteering to help those less fortunate than her, participating in community events, camping outdoors, and gardening. Oh boy, did she garden. Elaine had numerous plant and landscape clippings from magazines and brochures, and her yards were always the envy of friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed classic rock music and reminisced often of concert memories with friends and family members. Elaine enjoyed playing games with extended family, and this love of games started with family game night throughout her childhood. She spent many an evening with her very fun group of Bunko gals, and Bunko night was always a highlight of her week.

Family and friends will miss Elaine's infectious personality and laughter, her willingness to help others, and true, quality friendship. Elaine is preceded in death by her parents: Harold and Theresa Stensrud. She is survived by her siblings: Mark Stensrud (Cheryl), Doug Stensrud (Jackie), Chris Stensrud (Cheryl), and Stacy Simpson (Jason), her daughter: Lindsay White, and her grandson: Rowan.

We welcome all who would like to honor Elaine to join us for an informal, but meaningful memorial.

Elaine and I worked together at the crane company and she was training me on my first day and we were in a tiny bedroom made office when my chair went backwards and I fell on the floor... Elaine started laughing so hard! I looked at her with a deer in the headlights look then I started laughing also! The next day it happened to her, she was on the floor!!!! We were both cracking up and laughed until we almost cried! We were immediately fast friends for life!!! I love her so! My life will never be the same without her! Rest in Peace Elaine Girl.
Until we meet again in Heaven! Your friend, Stephanie

Elaine was a kind and caring friend. She taught me many things about business and was a listening ear for me. I appreciate so much her friendship over the years and how she always took time for people. She is dearly missed.

Elaine helped my business in tremendous ways as a professional, through her bookkeeping, but also with advice about business and life in general. She was always pleasant, and so encouraging! Our professional relationship evolved into a friendship, and boy we would have fun talking about plants and her yard! She will always hold a special place in my heart.

Elaine was born the year I went in the service. Her Mom would send me pictures of her over the next two years of her growth and resoluteness (like her mother). I missed many years of her progress, but later reconnected. What a delightful, sweet, open minded lady she had become. We enjoyed numerous long phone chats regarding the future and retirement. So sorry her time was cut short. We miss her gracious presence. Jim and Georgene Van Orsow

Elaine was my bookkeeper. She was super benevolent. I told her she should always charge more but she never really did. She would come by and pick up my stuff and drop off the reports. You just don't get that type of service today anywhere. I think of all her customers are devastated because she made our lives a lot easier and lot better. She was smart and great and what she did and super, super nice. I will so miss her! God must be taking really good care of her because she took such great care of us!

Elaine was a visionary in every sense of the word. She always had her hands in various project´s, which often involved dirt. Her passion for gardening was quite literally in her genes.
I will miss our long conversations about gardening, family, new projects, adventures and the weather, another Stensrud trait. Above all else my sister was kind and loved unconditionally.
I remember picking huckleberries at Mt. Adams with her. I gave everyone the bear talk before our picking began. While she was happily plucking away filling her bucket, I thought it would be fun to scare her with my best bear impression. It worked, she screamed, ran for the hills and spilled her berries. We had a good belly laugh that day and reminisced about it often.
I can still hear her laughter ringing in my ears. That laugh. Her laugh. At her jokes, your jokes and my jokes. We had lots of laughs, I´m gonna miss that.
I´ll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new
I´ll be looking at the moon
But I´ll be seeing you.

Elaine was the leader of our siblings showing determination and a strong work ethic leading by examples or. She also protected us from being bullied. We had this big guy in one of our Hermiston neighborhoods and she stood toe to toe with him to protect us. I will miss the phone conversations and texting that we were doing on a regular basis. I regret not having spent more in-person time but we were all busy with our immediate family needs. Elaine will be greatly missed by all and may she rest in peace and God bless her.

Elaine was my best friend´s mom, and for a number of years I basically lived at her house. One of my favorite memories is when "Santa" brought presents to our little fort behind the wall. Such a sweet thing to think of!
