Elda Unger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 18, 2023.
Elda Dixler Unger was a fabulous force of nature. From Chicago to Malibu, she was an icon. She brought creativity and joy wherever she went. She thrived in gardens and boardrooms alike. Born in Chicago in 1930, she lived above the grocery store her parents ran. While attending Roosevelt College, she married Dan on December 23, 1951. They were inseparable until his death in 2013. The family lived in Paris in the late 1970s where Elda painted and also studied cooking at the Cordon Bleu. Onward to Malibu in 1978. Elda went on to earn an MA in art therapy from Goddard College and helped found, head, and expand Free Arts for Abused Children. She was an award-winning leader in the California Arts Therapy community. Adored by artists and aristocrats, Elda dedicated her life to supporting children in need. She had the unending love of her children, Jeffrey, Lauren, and Eden, and her son-in-law, Nate; her grandchildren, Julius, Lyric, and Cyrus; her soul sister, Kati Samet and family; her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Rosalie Dixler and their sons; her sister-in-law, Joan, and her nephew, David Deutsch; cousins April and the Sugarmans, Suzi Wilner, all of the LeVines; her devoted godchildren, Rick Nowels and Maria Vidal; her daughter-in-law, Marilynn Pardee and daughter, Eloise; her adopted grandson, Taylor Woodward; and her many interesting, passionate, and dear friends who she adored. Her family will announce plans for a celebration of her life this spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family emphatically welcomes donations to the Elda Unger Scholarship Fund at Plymouth State University, which can be sent to Advancement Services ATT: Elda Unger Scholarship Fund, MSC 50, 17 High St., Plymouth, NH 03264-1595 or give online at https://give.plymouth.edu/unger.

Missed Dan... now your kind and gentle soul. Anne had you as a mentor in Art Therapy, and we volunteered for Free Arts for several years. Loved the Wildlife House and the Trancas home... you were always generous with your time and loved helping children... You were an inspiration... now to work on other things important to you in that next place.... blessings!

I first met Elda in Paris, when I was 11 and attended the Ecole Active Bilingue, where I bonded immediately with Eden. I was welcomed so often in the Unger home in Paris and then in Malibu. Elda was an incredibly elegant, sophisticated, clever woman with a beautiful smile and a zest for life, a wonderful hostess and a powerhouse in everything she did. A great loss. Sending love to all the family xx

The Elda I knew also had a smile. She was warm and welcoming and treated everyone as special. Will miss her.

Elda and Dan taught me what it means to be a graceful, loving couple. The attached photo of the two of them, which I shot at their Malibu home in 2000, captures a little of that, I think. Their example was a beacon to me and so many. Dan was my professional mentor, the man who inspired me to start my own business, a business that turns 20 years old next month. And Elda was the loving, effortless hostess who made everyone feel welcome, all the while wielding her positive influence behind the scenes with nary so much as her fingerprint on it. I miss them both, and I always will.
