Eleanor HENRY Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Jan. 24, 2015.
HENRY, Eleanor (nee Howard)
Eleanor died peacefully on January 5, 2015 in Grace Manor Ottawa at 101 years of age. She was born on November 1, 1913 in Winnipeg to Anne Gwendolyn Howard (nee Smart) and Rupert Fortescue Howard. Her twin brother F/L Paul Howard (DFC, RCAF) died on January 3/4, 1945 in Germany. Eleanor married Ernest Floyd Lake Henry in Ottawa on September 27, 1941. Grieving while cherishing her long life and lasting influences are her sons, Howard Henry (Sheila) and Paul Henry (Anne Meehan); grandchildren, Christopher Henry (Adrienne), Susan McGrath, Alison Henry-Halliday (James), Andrew Henry, Nicola Henry (Kyle Fridgen), Tristan Henry (Reighan Murphy); great- grandchildren, Evan and Scott Henry, Shannon McGrath, Cameron and Anna Halliday. Remembering Eleanor fondly are her sister-in-law Jeane Lloyd, niece Valerie Clements (Ted), and step-grandchildren Jan Baum (Ira), Sari Sanders (Richard), James Flagal (Paul Jamnicky), Robert Flagal (Johanna), Elizabeth Rotman (Noah), Marc Meehan, Melanie Meehan and Morgan Meehan. Eleanor enjoyed painting, gardening, living abroad, Bermuda holidays and cottage summers. She treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, life- long friends Helen Burns, Pat Macoun and Mary Desbarats, and adored her dogs and recently her cat. A keen volunteer, she became a life member of the Ottawa May Court Club. Among her utmost joys were 53 year of marriage and raising her two little boys. Widowed 20 years ago, Eleanor faced living alone with courage, resilience and feistiness. A Memorial Service will occur this spring in Ottawa and interment at Beechwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please support the Salvation Army Grace Manor (Ottawa) or the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa & Renfrew County. The family is very grateful to Dr. Lloyd Rossman and Grace Manor's staff and volunteers, particularly Emily Field and the Rosemont House RPNs and PSWs.
