Elizabeth Barber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 22 to Dec. 23, 2007.
PLATTSBURGH -- Elizabeth Barber died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 25, 1925, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Hogarth) Mulligan.
Betty graduated grade school at age 14 and then went to work at Blair's Wee Store in Glasgow.
During World War II, she served in Scotland's Land Army, working as a farm hand, while the men were at war. Although, she was a skinny city kid, she worked on the Rough Mussel Dairy Farm and delivered milk using a horse with a buggy behind. Following the war, she worked at Biggars Music Store in Glasgow, a job that nourished her love of music.
She immigrated to the U.S. in 1952, where she worked for a Plattsburgh family to repay her passage. She met George J. Barber in an adult art class at Plattsburgh High School. She and George were married on Dec. 1, 1953, at the First Baptist Church in Plattsburgh.
Together they lived life to the fullest for 54 years. They raised six children (and numerous critters) at the Macombstead and provided a home to many. She is beloved for her kindness, wisdom, generous spirit and sense of humor.
Betty is survived by her husband, George; five children, Eileen Allen and her husband, Peter, of Plattsburgh, Thomas Barber of Plattsburgh, Elizabeth Marie Barber of Plattsburgh, David Barber and his wife, Ann, of Mombassa, Kenya, and James Barber and his wife, Carol, of Plattsburgh; one brother, John "Jackie" Mulligan and his wife, Mary, of Glasgow; and four grandchildren.
Her daughter and twin sister of David, Helen Barber Klaus, died in 1992; and a son, Mulligan Barber, died in infancy.
A special heartfelt thanks goes to the "Nurses on R-5" from Betty's family.
"An Afternoon of Remembrance" will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, on the second floor of the North Country Co-op, on Bridge Street from 2 to 4 p.m.
Arrangements are with the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.

Dear Barber Family,

Please accept my belated condolencees of the death of your wife, and mother. I only just heard about it this past Sunday. While I did not know Mrs. Barber I can see from reading posts from others that she was a kind, well liked person. And I know from some of the family members I do know, that her kindness and personality obviously passed on to them as well!

Deepest regrets,
Martine and David

Dear George and Family:
These are some sweet memories of my friend Betty:
I will always remember Betty's devotion to her family, and her love and pride for her beautiful children.
I will always remember that for me, you can't have a Betty without a George, or a George without a Betty. Whether in body or spirit they will always be together.
I will always remember Betty's acceptance, love and compassion expressed in her kind thoughts and understanding towards everyone.
I will always remember Betty standing in her kitchen making tea, preparing George's lunch or dinner for the family, smiling and making humorous comments along with words of wisdom.
I will always remember Betty's kitchen as a gathering place of good natured conversation with a dash of bantering frequently thrown in.
I will always remember Betty's comforting, soft and lilting voice and warm hugs.
I will always remember the fun we had in Yoga class with tea afterwards with special girl talk.
I will always remember Betty's joy of gardening and her beautiful yellow roses.
But most of all I will always remember feeling at home at George and Betty's.
With much love to George and family,

Patricia and Marc Brenner

Dear George and Family,
Betty was warm like the sunshine to all that knew her. When I hear the song "Here comes the sun." I cry tears of joy as I am reminded of her love and peace . When I was a little girl Betty always took time out of her busy day to take care of me, Just like a mom. Betty and George loved each other so much that it showed in everything they did. I remember lots of picnics, laughter, the Barber children playing music, Betty and George Building my father's Dome and how excited everyone was. Making baked Potatoes in the wood fire stove on Party Road. I can still hear her soft voice, and taste her wonderful cooking , especialy Betty's Rhubarb pie. Betty is with all of us in our Heart and soul forever. I know she would want us all to give lots of love to her best friend and husband Sweet George and children. Let us all celebrate what Elizabeth Barber lived for . Selfless living, loving all life and nature, "Power to the peaceful". My lovely Betty.
Love,
Natasha Kohn xoxoxoxo

Betty was one of the most generous people we have ever met. You could not stop by without her making you a cup of tea and a snack. We will miss her dearly. Her laugh was a pleasure to listen to.
