May 27, 2014 - Calgary, Alberta
Elizabeth Ann Dawson-Grove (nee East), beloved wife of the late Glascott Eyre Dawson-Grove (D-G), passed away peacefully on May 27, 2014 in Calgary at the age of 87. Born February 7, 1927 in Hampstead, County of London, England, to the late Dr. Terence and Muriel East (nee Stein), Elizabeth grew up in Wimbledon, London. To escape WWII bombing, the family relocated to a rural home where she raised rabbits as her contribution to the war effort for national food production and attended a Farm School. She then boarded at Cheltenham Ladies College where her favourite subjects were art (drawing, painting) and music (piano). She studied Physiotherapy at King's College Hospital in London, graduating with her two-year diploma in 1948. Elizabeth then embarked on her dream of travelling and working as a Physiotherapist, journeying to Denmark and Sweden, then returned to England to work at Adenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. In 1952, she met and became engaged to her future husband, Glascott. In 1953, she boarded an immigrant ship to Australia, to reunite with her mother who was assistant manager at Menzies Hotel, Melbourne. She worked in hospitals in Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as in New Zealand. In 1954, she travelled by ocean liner with her mother to meet her fiancé, Glascott, in Los Angeles, California where they were married. She worked as a Physiotherapist in California before Louisa was born in Ventura and after Lucy was born in Santa Monica, the young family moved to Farmington, New Mexico. In 1961, they immigrated to Canada and settled in Calgary where Elizabeth made many lasting lifelong friends. She was passionate about her incredible flower garden, despite the ever- challenging Prairie climate. Most weekends were spent skiing or hiking in the Rockies, or sailing on the Glenmore Reservoir. Elizabeth began working again as a Physiotherapist in 1969 and helped to heal many grateful patients over her 25-year career at Holy Cross Hospital. Retiring at age 69, and ever curious and adventuresome, she continued to enjoy cross-country skiing, hiking, travelling abroad, gardening, bird watching and sketching. She discovered that she could grow beautiful roses in her lovely garden. Elizabeth became an avid reader of a variety of books and pursued her interest in family history. Most recently, she delighted in having orchids bloom in her sunroom. On her 87th birthday, Elizabeth purchased her own tablet and was learning to use it. Throughout her life, Elizabeth's infectious enthusiasm, energy and determination were an inspiration to all who met and knew her. Elizabeth is predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years and survived by their two daughters, Louisa (Bill) Chapman of Williams Lake, BC, and Lucy Forster of Calgary; five grandchildren, Laticia, Oleh and Roman Chapman, and John and Claire Forster. Dear Lucy and Louisa ... so so sad to hear of Elizabeth's death ... she was my Godmother, and I had so hoped to introduce her to my daughter sometime soon ... she was someone I didn't know well, but whose inspiration was always there in the background of my life. My mother received your letter this morning and is terribly sad, they shared so many happy times together ... sending our love Ellie (Elizabeth) Stoneley, and Hilda

Dear Lucy and Louisa and families, we grieve with you but also remember the times we shared. A bunch of flowers, wilted by now, are at your mother's doorstep in memory of her lovely garden. Memories do not fade. Flowers do. Lovingly remembered by Herrat, Mike, Hedda and family.

Dear Lucy and Louisa and families, your parents were such a part of the Sturgess family lives, and your Mum was such a good friend to my mother Betty. I spoke to her recently after my mother's death, she was so proud of her grandchildren. Condolences to you all, love, Carol Johnson
