I will miss my friend Betty. She who started out as a mother-figure to me in childhood became my friend in adulthood. When I was young, Betty was my next-door neighbor, and the only adult I knew who let me call her by her first name. She welcomed me into her home as if I belonged there. My brother and I spent many hours in her home watching her bake, sew, entertain, paint, and take care of her father. She was like a second mother to us in many ways.
As an adult I knew Betty more as a friend. She entertained me with stories from my childhood, telling me many things I did not remember. Even as she grew older, her memory was always impeccable and her stories full of detail. Her elegance was also one of her distinguishing features. If I came to visit, she was always beautifully dressed with accessories and jewelery to match her cheery outfits. Even though she was blind, she had a flair for fashion and looking nice. Once we surprised her with a visit when she was sick with pneumonia and in the health center. She gracefully received our visit looking beautiful in a fashionable robe and slippers with her hair nicely styled. She never complained about being tired or not feeling well. Even in illness she managed to produce some good stories and be a perfect hostess.
The thing that impressed me the most over the years was Betty's cheerful optimism and her desire to live well each and every day. She did not bemoan her infirmities. She never gave up her walks and always advised me to work a little walking into my daily schedule. She gave advice without being preachy. Betty was a beautiful, elegant woman with a kind heart and a love of life. She had a great impact on the lives of me and my siblings and parents. Her zest for life and her compassion for others will forever affect my own desire to live a good life. I will miss you Betty. But I will carry you with me always,
Betty and Matthew L.
