Elizabeth Rada Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 6 to Oct. 8, 2010.
April 13, 1993 -
October 2, 2010
Elizabeth Amy Rada passed away after a four-year battle with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, and leukemia (AML). She died at home surrounded by her loving family.
Elizabeth loved attending The Charter School of Wilmington, where she was a senior. She was a member of The National Honor Society and the Bible Club, as well as the Manager for the Varsity Softball Team and a Peer Leader. She founded and was President of C.H.U.B. Club (Children Hospital Under Benefit), a group supporting A. I. duPont Hospital for Children. Elizabeth was a member of the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church.
Elizabeth loved to cook and developed a Family Heritage Cookbook with her Nana, Elizabeth Munson. She loved fishing at the beach with her Grandad, Edwin Munson and Aunt, Amy Munson. Elizabeth loved watching The Food Network with her Mom and baseball with her Dad. Each weekend, she enjoyed video games with her brother and cousins. She loved overnights at Aunt Sandy and Uncle Joe's. She loved God, road trips, roller coasters, softball, her BMW, the beach, her friends, her family, swimming at Nan's and her mini-poodle and best buddy, Crystal. She adored her best friend and older brother, Mikie. Elizabeth was kind, generous, deeply religious and surely bound for Heaven.
Elizabeth was the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers fan and was fortunate enough to meet several of the players. Her favorite was Troy Polamalu, who became her friend.
Despite years of treatment, Elizabeth always had a positive outlook. She planned to attend Muhlenberg College next fall. The girl who always wore a smile wanted to become an orthodontist.
Elizabeth will be dearly missed by her parents, David and Sally (Munson) Rada and her beloved brother, Michael, all of Hockessin. She dearly loved her grandparents, Elizabeth and Edwin Munson of New Castle. She is also survived by her Aunt Amy Munson of New Castle. From Hockessin, Elizabeth is survived by her Aunt Sandy and Uncle Joseph Genett and her cousins, who were more like brothers, Joseph, Jared and Andrew. She is also survived by grandparents, Robert and Lindsley Rada from South Carolina; Uncle Paul Rada and family from Pennsylvania; and Aunt Gretchen Rada Willingham and family from South Carolina. Elizabeth had many Aunts, Uncles and Cousins from Wyoming Valley and York, Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth received treatment at the A. I. duPont Hospital for Children. The staff in every department treated her so kindly that she made many friends. Her family would like to thank the many health professionals who tried so hard to cure Elizabeth. Special thanks to Dr. Robin Miller, Dr. Mihir Thacker, Dr. Andy Kolb and Dr. Doug Katz. Also, special thanks to the wonderful staff of The Charter School of Wilmington. Elizabeth loved to support the football team, to maintain an "A" average, loved her fellow students and was proud to be a part of the Charter Family.
A funeral service will be held at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennans Church Road, Wilmington on Saturday, October 9, at 11 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. Friends may visit at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Friday, October 8 from 4 - 8 pm.
Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, PO Box 749596, Los Angeles, CA 90074-9596 (www.wish.org) or A. I. duPont Hospital for Children, 1600 Rockland Rd., Wilm., DE 19803 (www.nemours.org).

To Elizabeth's family:

I came to interview Elizabeth and her mom to learn about her story for a fundraising appeal to benefit Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children a few years ago and saw Elizabeth and her mom at the hospital several times after that. I was always impressed by her upbeat personality in the face of her disease. She was bright and vivacious, as well as academically gifted. My thoughts are with all of you in your loss.

When Liz was first diagnosed with cancer, I was lucky enough to become her homebound teacher. I looked forward to seeing Liz whenever her body was willing. Every time I left, I realized what a truly amazing kid she was. There were many days when she could barely move, but she always said she was feeling well and having a good day. We'll always remember you Liz!

Gretchen being best friends in our younger years in Hockessin just wanted to give you and your family a huge hug from ours. Looking at Liz she looked so much like you and she did so many wonderful things in her life I wish I had met her. When we rode bikes together and fished in our neighborhood being carefree and innocent is what I pray she is doing now out of pain and being a fun loving child again like we had so we can all meet up again one day to play kick the can.

Elizabeth is in Heaven waiting to greet all of her family who loved her, and her friends, like us, who loved and admired her for her strength and courage. God Bless You All!

On behalf of the choir of Brookwood Community Church, I would like to express our sadness at Elizabeth's passing. One of our choir members is a neighbor of Elizabeth's Aunt Gretchen. We have been praying for Elizabeth and your family. Her brave battle against this disease really touched me as I have a daughter about the same age and can't imagine having to let her go. Elizabeth was obviously a very special person which reflects that she was the product of a very special family. May God comfort and strengthen you all as only He can.

Dear Rada Family,

Elizabeth has touched the hearts of many and will never be forgotten. She was the best softball manager, always smiling and having fun. Yet, probably the worst sunflower seed spitter around, but it always kept the bench interesting. She always knew how to put a smile on my face. Please know I am thinking about each of you, and will keep you in my prayers and thoughts.

Liz- you were the best friend a girl could ask for. I'm going to miss drooling over Sam Worthington in Avatar, arguing over Top Chef, and coming up with nicknames for each other. Elizabeth was such an inspiration to us through Brian's battle with ostesarcoma & Brian had always made sure in physical therapy that he was right where Elizabeth was. He always used her as his guide to make sure he was keeping up with her. She was so helpful to us & meeting her we knew that Brian could make it through this incredibly tough journey. She was such an amazing young woman & we are lucky to have known her. We are members of a "family" we all never wanted to be in but, having her in our "family" was a total honor. Our hearts are broken to hear of her passing & she will always hold a piece of our hearts forever.
