ELIZABETH "IRENE" (APPELBE)
Of Mt. Lebanon, on Thursday, November 7, 2013. Beloved wife of the late John J. Russell (FBI-retired); loving mother of eight children, Paul, Sarah, Francis, John (Lisa), Rosemary (Ray) Niemczura, Elizabeth (Greg) Domaracki, James (Colleen Howard), Nancy (Mark) McKenna; grandmother of Ian and Nolan Russell, Mary Russell, John and Anne Domaracki, Elizabeth McKenna and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Ellen (O'Donnell) Appelbe; brothers, F. Clark and John Appelbe; sisters, Mary Katherine MacPherson, Winifred Dattilo and Anita Shannon. Friends welcome Sunday 2-8 p.m. at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Twp. Mass of Christian Burial Monday 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church. Dear Liz and Family,
So sorry and sad to hear about your Mom's passing. We'll always remember what a that beautiful smile. Eventhough we only knew you all for a short period of time, you and your Mom left us with a lasting impression. The Baptist Homes brought many good people together. You were so dedicated to your Mom, and will be missed tremendously at the Home with all the help you also provided to the other residents. Your heart was as big as your smile, and it was obvious what a caring and devoted daughter you were to lovely Ms. Irene. We both lost some special Moms this year. God will take good care of them, and we'd bet they are enjoying being reunited with their loved ones on the other side. May she rest in peace, and you will all be in our prayers.

I was saddened to learn through my Fontbonne classmate of your beloved mother's passing. I have fond memories of her and of your lovely home where we gathered as teens. I cannot, to this day, hear a Janis Joplin tune without thinking of Irene.

Dear Sarah and family--- I was out of town or would certainly have paid my respects to your dear Mother. She was a "classic" -- full of spirit and supremely capable with a razor sharp wit and positive attitude. Though 1301 Firwood was already bursting at the seams, she always made me feel welcome. I tried to be on my best behavior for her---and that was a good thing. On behalf of the entire Wallace clan, I extend sincere sympathy to all of you. Precious few women could do what your Mom (and ours) did and do it so well. Godspeed, Irene.
