Elizabeth Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 31 to Jun. 5, 2023.
On May 19, 2023, Elizabeth Thompson passed away in the 101st year of her life. Born January 2, 1923, the youngest daughter of Ralph Vosberg Tiffany and Helen (Gaylord) Tiffany, she attended public schools in Winsted CT. She entered Smith College in the fall of 1940 as a member of the Class of 1944 but chose to take a leave of absence in 1942 to marry Norman F Thompson III (1916 - 2011). In the mid-50's, she returned to Smith College to resume her college coursework, earning a BA degree. This prepared her for a teaching post at the Gilbert School in Winsted. Students vividly recall the uncompromising standards she maintained in her English and French classes. During the 1960's, Elizabeth actively participated in Litchfield County equestrian events, having at one point 3 horses under her care and tutelage. Other interests were aviation, geology, and all manner of details regarding the legendary Lewis & Clark Expedition. Her administrative abilities were called upon in serving on several local boards, notably the Regional 7 Board of Ed., the Greenwood Scholarship Foundation, the Colebrook Historical Society and the Winsted Playground Association. Elizabeth Thompson was predeceased by her husband Norman Frederick Thompson, her son Norman Brace Thompson, and a grandson Robert Norman Thompson. She is survived by her son Stephen Thompson, her son Jonathan P. Thompson and his wife Tara, and a daughter Helen G. Thompson and daughter-in-law Gail Thompson. She is also survived by her grandchildren, James Thompson, Brittany Thompson, Aurora Thompson; her step-grandchildren, Danielle Binzer, and Alyssa Calder; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for the 24th of June 2023.
