Elizabeth Holly “Beth” Butterfield Webster, 66, originally from Bangor, Maine, passed away on January 7, 2023, following a long struggle with Frontotemporal Dementia. She was a daughter of Dr. Wilfred I. and Elizabeth Butterfield of Lincoln, Maine.
Beth grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Mattanawcook High School and worked as a summer lifeguard and the local ski patrol. A 1978 graduate of University of Maine, Orono, Beth earned a dual degree in Economic and Journalism there. She also earned a master’s in business administration from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Despite extensive traveling, Beth maintained ties to Maine as a freelance journalist for over twenty-five years with the Lewiston Sun Journal, the Bangor Daily News, and the Portland Press Herald. Beth also ran a successful desktop publishing business for several years.
Her father’s camp on Cold Stream Pond in Enfield, Maine, was Beth’s favorite place on Earth where she could be found on the dock catching rays and overseeing family water activities. An accomplished swimmer, Beth volunteered with various special needs children’s programs in local pools where many benefitted from her athletic abilities, compassion, and empathy. As a friend, she was unrivaled in her dedication and gift-giving. Always free with her laugh and generosity, she kept meticulous records for birthdays and Holidays, ensuring every occasion was acknowledged with phone calls and lifetime mementos.
She was a loving mother to Andrew of Boston, and Noelle of Seattle, her children with William Webster. She is also survived by her aunt Winifred Robinson, her sister, Audrey Knight (Christopher), nephew Eric and niece Ana Knight, and a sister-in-law, Christine Butterfield, and nieces Melissa and Amy, and their children. A private memorial service is planned. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

My Grandparents camp was next to the Butterfields on Cold Streampond. My two sisters and I loved the Butterfields. It was my favorite place when I was a child. Elizabeth could swim like a fish even as a child. Sorry to find of her recent passing.

We were very blessed to have Beth and Russ as our neighbors across the street on Olde Colony Lane in Cape Elizabeth for many years. We will always remember them sitting on their patio enjoying the morning sun reflecting off the ocean or walking together holding hands (as Beth’s disease gradually began to limit her physical activity) . We send our sincerest condolences to Russ, Andrew and Noelle.
