Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Berchman's Church in Cankton, Louisiana, for Nelwyn Daigle Hebert who died at her home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, October 15, 2016. The Rev. Msgr. Russell Harrington will celebrate the mass and officiate at funeral services. Musical selections will be sung by Sarah Currier, accompanied by Phyllis Simar on the organ. The songs include "Be Not Afraid", "On Eagle's Wings", "Hail Mary", and "Coeur de Jesus." Mrs. Hebert, born in the Bristol-Cankton area on June 30, 1924, was the daughter of Mories Daigle and Philomene Sibille Daigle. She attended elementary school in Cankton and graduated from Sunset High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of the Sacred Heart and taught in the St. Landry Parish School System for 26 years. Following her retirement, she became active in the ministries of St. John Berchman's Catholic Church, serving as C.C.D. teacher, Coordinator of Religious Education, choir member, cantor, Eucharistic Lay Minister, lector, and member of the Altar Society. Mrs. Hebert was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Charles F. "Pat" Hebert; her parents; her sister, Mamie D. Lowe; an infant brother, Ferdinand Daigle; a son-in-law, Sam D'Amico Jr.; and an infant great-granddaughter, Willow Rose Hebert. Survivors include one son, Larry Hebert and his wife, Lucille, of St. Martinville; three daughters, Carole D'Amico of Opelousas, Sandy LaBry of Lafayette, and Faye Abshire and her husband, Danny, of Lafayette; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Velma Sibille and her husband, Winfred Sibille, of Sunset. A rosary will be recited on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in Melancon Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Melancon Funeral Home and will reopen at St. John Berchman's Catholic Church in Cankton, Louisiana at 9:00 a.m. until time of services. Interment will be at the St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Grand Coteau following the funeral service. The family would like to thank especially the staff of LGH, AAA Hospice and Mrs. Hebert's devoted caregivers, Lisa Venable, Kim Smith and Sandra Langley. Sorry to hear of the lost of Mr. Hebert. The Bible tells us Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you. One of the principal ways to draw close to God is thorough prayer. Do not underestimate its value!
