Ellen Kypta (née Echelberger), aged 73, passed away on October 24, 2024, in Charleston, South Carolina. Born on August 13, 1951, in Ashland, Ohio, Ellen was known for her kind and generous spirit, her infectious laugh, and her deep love for her family.

Ellen's journey through life took her from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic, California, New England, and finally to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. A graduate of Ashland High School and Columbus Business School, Ellen had a fulfilling career in the life insurance industry, contributing over 15 years of service in both Ohio and Maryland.

Ellen's true passion was building a beautiful home life for her husband and son. She also loved reading, travel, cooking and wine. Her travels took her all over the world, from New Zealand to Cuba to London, Rome, and Paris. She was a proud member of the Daniel Island Club and cherished her time there, particularly while playing Mahjong, which brought joy not only to her but also to those around her.

Ellen was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit on Daniel Island, SC. Her faith and dedication to the church were profound and heartfelt.

She is survived by her loving husband, Richard of Daniel Island, and her son, Matthew of Washington, D.C. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, James W. Echelberger and Alice (née Long) Echelberger and by her brother Matthew.

A private funeral service is planned to honor Ellen's life. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit, Daniel Island, SC, or Chamber Music Charleston, Charleston, SC.

The Palmetto Cremation Society of North Charleston is assisting the family during this difficult time. Ellen Kypta's legacy of love, laughter, and community will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.

We shared in the building and outfitting of our new homes together and enjoyed some very excellent wines and dinners.
Ellen had a sly beauty and a clever humor. With a good eye for design she had me replace the countertop and refinish her desk. A kind, compassionate and wonderful person.
