Ellis was born in Flint, Michigan on December 9, 1944, the son of Norman and Betty (Khoury) Salim.
On June 22, 1969 he married Elaine Hourani in Charleston, West Virginia. Together, they had 53 years in wedded bliss, three loving children, and the most beautiful grandchildren.
Ellis' biggest love in life was for his family. He was an amazing friend to so many, and simply a selfless man to the core.
Ellis was a member of St. George Orthodox Church and Chairman of the Parish Council. He was a Shriner and Mason. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Salim was a University of Michigan alumni and avid fan. He was Vice President for Student Services for 40 years at Baker College Systems. He guided so many people in their pursuit of their educational goals and was referred to as the "Godfather of Financial Aid" by peers in his profession (very suiting nickname because of his love for The Godfather movies). Because he was nationally recognized for his expertise, he was invited to Washington DC to sit on Federal Regulations Panels. His achievements both personal and professional were endless.
Surviving are wife, Elaine;
children, Ed Salim and wife Jennifer, Stacy and husband Jasen Sack;
grandchildren, Drake, Alexandria, Brock, Elaina, Sophia, Daniel, Mitchell and Mariah;
sister, Phyllis Good of Lansing;
brother-in-law, Dr. Jameel and wife Judy Hourani;
sister-in-law, Loraine and husband Sam Stout;
many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Norman Paul; parents, Norman and Betty Salim; brother, Dr. Fred Salim; sister, Norma Lazar; sister-in-law, Norma Salim; brother-in-law, David Lazar; mother and father-in-law, Nellie and Edy Hourani.

I was very saddened to hear about the loss of Ellis today. A book could be written to tell you what he meant to me.
Through his leadership, mentorship, and wisdom, I accomplished many professional goals that I never thought possible. For that, I could never repay him and will be forever grateful. My favorite Ellis saying was, “be careful what you ask for.. you just might get it”. I remember him telling me how he taught his grandson (I believe) to hit very small rocks so baseballs would look huge. His favorite baseball player was Al Kaline. He told many stories about his baseball hero. I learned a lot about heroes from Ellis because he would ask job candidates who their hero was. I loved that question because you never knew what kind of answer you would get but it would always be a good one. That question became a staple of mine thereafter. I pray that God blesses you with comfort and peace at this difficult time. Ellis is in a better place. He touched many lives during his days on this earth. I am a testimony to that.
