GUCKERT
ELMER BERNARD "COACH"
"Coach Guckert", age 84, McCandless Township, peacefully went on to glory with his family at his side on June 6, 2013, his 60th wedding anniversary. Beloved husband of the late Gloria J. Guckert; loving father of Kathy (Dent) Allison, Karen (David) Morris, Jim Guckert, and Sarah (Philip) Rizzitano; proud grandfather of Laura and Thomas Allison, Thad, Hanna, Ellie and Jennie Morris, Amanda Guckert, Shannon (Eric) Franklin, and Marissa Guckert, Anthony and Nicole Rizzitano; great- grandfather of Gianna and Kylee Roak; cousin of David (Ruth) Palmer; brother-In-law to the late Robert and Maryann Ganter. He was close with his nieces and a nephew, Gary Ganter of Odessa, Texas, Barbara Wagon of Midland, Texas and Debra Ganter of Denver, Colorado. Elmer graduated from Oliver High School in 1947 and lettered in basketball and baseball. He attended The University of Pittsburgh, majoring in teaching and playing baseball as left handed pitcher, later achieving a Masters in teaching in 1957. He played on baseball sandlot teams in Pittsburgh and a farm league for the Pittsburgh Pirates. After graduating, he taught for one year at Shanksville Stoney Creek High School. Drafted on August 6, 1953, he served in Fort Knox, Kentucky for two years. He then taught physical education, driver's education and health at Shanksville and Fifth Avenue High Schools and coached several sports, including basketball, swimming, baseball, and cross country, (three time city champs). His basketball teams at Fifth Avenue were City Champions in 1974, 1975 and 1976 and State Champions in 1976. After Fifth Avenue closed, he taught at Brashear High School, his basketball team winning several City Championships. His basketball coaching record included ten City Championship teams, three Western PA Championships, one State Runner up, and two State Championships. His multiple awards included three time winner of the Western Chapter Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Coach's Award, four time Post-Gazette Basketball Coach of the year, a P-G Dapper Dan Awardee in 1986, and induction into the Western Pennsylvania Hall of Fame on May 5, 1996. He coached several notable athletes including Sam Clancy, Warner Macklin, Dwight Clay, David Kennedy, Wynorris Banks and Major Harris. He was also a PIAA Official in basketball, baseball and softball. On May 21,1976, Elmer officiated a National League Pirate/Cubs baseball game when umpires refused to cross a food service picket line at Three Rivers Stadium. Elmer was an active member at Christ Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry and as an usher. He was a 50 year member Mason and Shriner. Always busy, Elmer packed and delivered Meals on Wheels in retirement. All who knew him enjoyed his sense of humor. Hot Ziggy Zagnuts, he was the life of the party, enjoyed people, and will be greatly missed. Honor his memory with the family on Friday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. at H. P. Coach Goog, I spent my High School years from 1972 - 1975 listening to Coach's words of wisdom that sunk in to many great students and athletes. Goog was well known and loved throughout Fifth Avenue (although many will deny it) and it is the tough love that he preached everyday that kept students on their toes and peeking from behind the lockers until someone screamed "here comes Goog, run!" Goog will always wear the Red and White of the Archers and I am sure that he will have the angels in heaven lining up on their numbers before class otherwise that will cost them ten points from their grade! Goog is blessed to have touched so many hearts and I am sure that his family has been reaping the benefits of Googisms. Peace and love to the entire Guckert family.

Because of dedicated and devoted teachers at Fifth Ave. High School, I was credited as being a good principal. But I do not take this for granted, because I remember upon the shoulders of fine teachers like Elmer Guckert who upon which I stood. They made my job a joy.

I had Mr. Guckert as my driving instructor. Loved every minute of it - quite a personality. He certainly challenged me such as Pig's hill during rush hour. He seemed like a great guy.

Rest in peace coach, you will be missed by so many people. As the manager of the Fifth Avenue High School mens basketball team during the 70s i had the honor to get to know coach Guckert up close and personal and I can say without reservation that he was a good man who always had the interest of the students at heart. Coach Guckert touched so many people in his life and everyone was a positive experience. I know God will use you as a mentor and coach in heaven coach so get out the notepad. To The Family,

Coach Guckert was a GREAT person. He always tried to teach the students at Brashear the proper way to do things.I was one of those students who took his guidance and applied it to everyday life. In basketball he reminded me to stay focused even if everyone else were not on task. When I was in the 10th grade, he told me I could be as good or better than Sam Clancy and play at Pitt. That one statement motivated me to work hard everyday.I was a 4year starter at PITT. Coach Guug(Is the name most students at Brahear called him),had a lot of Guugisms that were popular in the 1980's at Brashear. My 2 favorites were ...FOR THE YEAR NOTHING and WHAT A WASTE OF THE MIND AND THE HUMAN BODY..he used them mostly in health class when guys would complain about the work or their grades. The 1984-85 basketball team I was on won the City League Championship and Runner Up in States. Those days are some of my best memories. Some of the bus rides were classic, everyone had fun and became closer with Coach Guckert.I still remember the time coach made Major Harris sit with him the entire ride back from Altoona. Coach was a GREAT MAN and I am a better person because of him...Good Bless You COACH

Little by little, the great vestiges of City League basketball is disappearing.
Coach Guckert was a big part of it, even though we at Allderdice always took a beating from his Fifth Avenue teams. I'm sure the Coach will have a great opportunity to coach a number of City League stars who preceded him in Heaven. Rest in peace Coach!
