Elmer Steger Obituary

Elmer H.H. Steger, 81, of Glen Rock, York County, formerly of Derry, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at his home.

A cabinetmaker, Mr. Steger retired in 1982 after operating his own furniture repair and refinishing shop in Derry for over 22 years. Prior to that, he repaired and refinished furniture with Steger Brothers Furniture in Harrisburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 80th Division for three years as Patton's Third Army in Europe. He received battle stars for Northern France, Ardennes Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and Central Europe. He also received the European African Middle East Service ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and The French Liberation Medal. He was a life member of the 80th Division Veterans Association, and he and his wife published a newsletter about his division company for 36 years. Mr. Steger also was a member of Im-manuel United Methodist Church, Glen Rock. He was born in Cumberland County, a son of the late Walter S. and Elsa M. (Luck) Steger, and was the husband of the late Betty H. Hall Steger. Survivors include two sons, Thomas H. Steger of Kingston Springs, Tenn., and Karl L. Steger of Glen Rock; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a brother, Albert P.E. Steger of Clarence, N.Y. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Glen Rock, Rev. Jacqueline Starz officiating. Interment was in Glen Rock Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church, 1 New St., Glen Rock, Pa. 17327, or to the Glen Rock Caroler's Association, in care of Robert L. Nicklow II, 4079 Manchester St., Glen Rock, Pa. 17327.
