VARMECKY – Elnora M. "Billie," 94, Johnstown, formerly of Ferndale, died May 1, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Nov. 29, 1914, in Johnstown, daughter of Henry L. and Stella V. (Corle) Martin. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Daniel G.; brothers, Lester and F. Leroy; and sisters, Mary Pauline Constable, Lillian Blaugh and Hazel Metcalf. Survived by daughter, Jo Anne, wife of Zane Hagins, Johnstown; granddaughters, Susan Lynne Shaffer and Amy Jo, married to Patrick Kopriva; great-grandchildren, Danielle Alexis Shaffer, Andrew "Andy" Phillip Shaffer, Elizabeth "Libby" Marie Ballow and Anthony "Tony" James Ballow; and former grandsons-in-law, Phillip M. Shaffer and James S. Ballow. Member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, DAR, Greater Johnstown Retired Teachers and Pennsylvania State Retired Teachers. Past president of Ferndale Area School District PTA and former member of Ferndale Historical Society. Retired teacher and principal of Ferndale Area School District. Friends received from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., where funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, the Rev. James Smelly. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
