Elsie Lichtenwald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 13 to Jul. 14, 2010.
ELSIE ROSALIA LICHTENWALD June 25th, 1934 July 11th, 2010 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dearest wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend at Royal University Hospital. Elsie leaves to mourn her husband of 60 years, Alvin; children, Donna (Brian) Anderson, Annette (Clarence) Konschuh, Larry (Cathy), Mary Jane (Malcolm) Zimmer, Duane (Lorelei), Bob (Wendy), John (Elaine), Keith (Debbie), Catharine Michalenko and Brian (Vivian); 33 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sisters, Agnes Streisel and Mona (Frank) Lipinski; brother, Arnie (Dodie) Flegel, sister-in-law Gagie (Bob) Foston; special friends, Helen Flegel, Gladys Murphy and Jean Syrenne as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Elsie was predeceased by her son, Steven; parents, Joseph and Elizabeth and brotherin-law, John Streisel. Mom's reason for being was for that of her family and friends. Her strong faith and Christian morals created a following of love and respect for those who knew her. We could always go to her for words of wisdom and support. Through difficult times she was grateful for the comfort of Christ at Mass, and the beads she worked through her fingers as she petitioned God to work in the lives of her loved ones and in our society. Elsie was born in Grayson, SK in 1934 and was the second oldest daughter to Joseph and Elizabeth Flegel. She married her school sweetheart and had 11 children. When her husband was out of town working she kept the family going. She was a master seamstress, cook and gardener always going above and beyond to help her loved ones. Elsie's remarkable abilities, organizational skills and faith made her a constant inspiration. Her life was a true witness of the gospel. Vigil for Elsie will be held on Friday, July 16th at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 17th at 10:00 a.m. Both services from Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place) with Rev. Father Ken Beck and Rev. Father Len Cyr concelebrating. A Private Family Committal will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery with Father Len Cyr presiding. We would like to extend our thanks to Dr. Stalker, Dr. Pollock and all those who contributed to her well being. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Elsie's memory may be made to the Development and Peace (c/o Holy Spirit Parish 114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon, SK S7J 3V7). Arrangements in care of David Polzen MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200).

The Lichtenwald family was joined by over 400 close relatives and friends on July 17,2010 to celebrate the life of Elsie. She had a special relationship with everyone she touched. Her smile, tenderness and faith will be missed by all. Her peaceful and content warm smile put all at ease before she was layed to rest at Woodlawn Cemetary alongside her son Steven who passed before her. The Lichtenwald family thanks everyone who attended and all the well-wishers for their thoughts and prayers. As the McCallum family said "Elsie was an Angel on earth and now she is everyone's Gardian Angel watching over us in Heaven".
Thank you Mom for everything you taught us and a special thank you to introducing us to our faith that you lived daily.

Dear Mary Jane and family: I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was a wonderful lady. It was always a pleasure to bump into her and have a little chat. Though those were few and far between, they are very memorable. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love,

Mom (Theresa Buzik nee Gelowitz) fondly remembers playing cards at Elsie's and one particular occasion when Elsie made a chiffon cake so light it was heavenly. I remember speking with Elsie on the phone last year when she called us in Calgary and extended a very sweet thank you for the family tree information and photos we sent to her. We both remember seeing Elsie's bright smiling face at so many family events. We were very shocked to hear of her death and wish to extend our most heartfelt sympathy to all family and friends.

To the entire Lichtenwald family, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to you all. There are so many great memories of growing up together as friends and neighbors from our old Albert Avenue days. Not only will I remember your Mom for her incredible cinnamon buns and Chocolate Drops (I still have the recipe from when I originally wrote it out back then!) but I'll especially remember her for her quiet strength and kindness always. Please know that you're all in my thoughts during this difficult time.

Dear Cathy
I have fond memories of the large "Lichtenwald family", as we were growing up. You and your brothers were tons of fun. Not alot of that old fashion type neighborhood play happens much anymore. I send my deepest condolences to you and your family, at this difficult time.

My sincere sympathy to all of the Lichtenwald family on the loss of your wonderful wife, Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma. Although I saw her rarely in recent years, she was always gracious and kind and I will remember her fondly. Take comfort in knowing that many are thinking of you at this difficult time and know she is with God.

I don't need to say what a shock it was to here about Auntie. We don't get home very often anymore, but, were lucky enough to see her on our last trip when she joined us for a BBQ at Pike Lake. Chris and I also got to spend a little time with her at her new home. Our lives have spread us out all over the place but I will always have great memories of the Barrel playhouse, annette's stories of Inky and picnicing with both our families at Jubilee Park.

We will see you friday.

To Alvin and the entire Lichtenwald family we would like to extend our prayers and thoughts to you during this difficult time. I have wonderful memories of growing up across the street from the Lichtenwald's, from our air band shows we forced our mom's to watch to the amazing aroma of fresh baked bread and buns in Elsie's kitchen. She was simply put, a true mother and mother is just another name for love.
Unfortunately I will be out of the country and will be unable to attend the service. Please know that we are with you in thought.
