It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce that Mr. Elvin Stanley Edwin “Captain Jack” Dampier, 91 years, of Nipigon, Ontario, passed peacefully in his sleep, with family by his side, on Sunday, November 11, 2018, in the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital. Jack was a loving and respectful person to all of his family and friends. He meant so much to so many. Jack was a man of few words. He was sensitive to others' feelings and he could always make you smile and laugh. His personality, generosity and hospitality were second to none. Jack worked tirelessly in all aspects of his life. Jack was self- employed as a commercial fisherman and a beachcomber for many years. He also worked in the bush as a mechanic for Abitibi Woodlands. Later in his life, he and his wife Maureen operated the Nipigon Coin Laundry and Drycleaners while they took visitors and friends for cruises on their boat the “Morning Star”. Jack was active in the National Marine Conservation Initiative, Project Peregrine and a member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. He did prospecting and trapping but his life centered around being out on Lake Superior; cruising, hunting and exploring. If not at home, he could be located at the dock and was often found having tea with friends, family or strangers. During baseball season it was widely known that he was not to be disturbed while his team, the Blue Jays were playing. But most important to him were his family and friends. Captain Jack will be remembered as one of the GREAT LEGENDS of Nipigon. God bless our hero! Predeceased by his parents – Arthur and Lottie Dampier, by his wife Maureen (2003), by two infant children Anita Mary and Joseph, son-in-law Gerry Todd, grandson Noah Todd, siblings – Henry (Devona) Dampier, Pearl (Harold) Lumsden, Harold (Ida) Dampier, Gordon (Arvella) Dampier, Mary (Jeff) Goneau, Lenora (Charles) Wesley, brothers-in-law – Lawrence Martin and Edward Belanger. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital for their Tender Loving Care of Captain Jack. Bless their hearts. Dear Gloria, Brian, Chazz and Sarah
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of a loving and kind gentleman. His integrity and strong family values were definitely passed on to his family. Be Blessed that you had the pleasure of being so close to such a peaceful and generous soul, all of these years. His quiet, friendly manner along with his sense of humour touched many hearts, and this is what we all should aspire to.
Your Dad's "Best Catch" was when he met and married your Mom, together they were two of the most cheerful people that walked through the doors when I was a Dental receptionist for Dr. F .Robertson, in the 1980's.
May sweet memories of a man so loved, bring you comfort and peace.
Sincere sympathy, Rhonda Tetreault
