ELVIRA BREKER Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Feb. 14 to Feb. 15, 2012.
Elvira Louise Breker November 1, 1930 February 12, 2012 It is with mixed emotions of joy and sadness the family of Elvira Elvie Breker of St. Mary's Villa, Humboldt, SK, announce her passing on February 12, 2012, at her residence. Left to mourn and celebrate her life are her children: Kurt (Audrey), Kevin (Peggy), Karl (Lauri), Joanne(Blair) Davidson, Kris (Corrine), and Eric (Melissa), and grandchildren Adam and Mark Breker, Mathieu, Michael and David Breker, Aime Breker, Matt (Jane) and Andy (Karen) Davidson, Nicole (Nathan), Andrew, Michelle, and Jordan Breker and Tegan and Ada Breker; great-grandchildren, Hyde, James, Joel and Jacob Davidson; two sisters, Hedy Ogilvie and Rosemarie (Paddy) Blenkinsop; one brother, Otto (Deb) Lang; brotherin-law, Ron (Carole) Breker; sister-in-law, Pauline Breker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Elvie was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Mathieu; parents, Otto and Maria (nee Wurm) Lang; brother-in-law, Jim Ogilvie; nephew, Bruce Ogilvie; and by her niece, Maria Lang. Elvie was born at Scott, SK, on November 1, 1930, the second of four siblings. Her parents, both teachers, moved their family from Handel to Cudworth, then Englefeld and, finally, Humboldt. After graduating from high school, Elvie began nurses' training at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, completing her RN in 1953. During training, classmates noted this caring, compassionate and faith-filled student. In 1953, she also married her handsome young suitor, Mathieu Breker and, after he completed his BSP degree, they moved to the Humboldt area to begin two new adventures together, farming and family, setting the stage for the rest of their lives together. After nursing for a few years, Elvie dedicated herself full time to her growing brood. Life was at times hard and hectic but she took every challenge with grace, dignity, faith and servant leadership, never having a negative thing to say about anyone or anything. Elvie loved to dance the night away at their many barn dances, sing, garden, prepare amazing meals, do crafts, and travel, but her greatest joy was the care for others. Once her own children had flown the coop she turned her attention to the grandkids. Trips to Grandma's are remembered with joy by all, whether for a week during summer or stopping in every morning for stories, backrubs and breakfasts. Elvie returned to work as a Pastoral Care Worker when not involved with the CWL, the Water Tower Committee, or the life as a politician's wife. Toward the end of Matt's life, she took care of him, first as caregiver at home and then visiting twice daily, every day while he was in care. Above all, Elvie was a blessed oneof-a-kind. Generous to all, her love, faith in God, sense of humour, quick smile and service were an inspiration and a model for her family and those who knew her. A friend said of her: She was the nicest, kindest person she ever knew. Another said: It was just like her to leave this world first having all her family at her side and in time to join Matt for Valentine's Day. Elvie's life will be celebrated at a Prayer Vigil on Friday, February 17th at 7:30 p.m., and at a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 18th at 10:00 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, with celebrant Fr. Emile April. Interment will follow at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery, Humboldt. Memorial donations in Elvie's memory can be made to Dr. Rajput Movement Disorders Research Foundation at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan or the St. Mary's Villa Foundation, Humboldt. Barry and I are thinking of you as your family gathers tonight to begin the celebration of Elvira's life. We know that your family will laugh and shed tears when telling the many stories and memories of a loving mother, grandmother and friend to many. Elvira would be proud and humbled to see her family honoring her as you say good-bye. I regret that I cannot attend but I will be thinking of you from afar.
