I can add some things to Woody's memory. He was an instructor of mathematics at UMO. His older brother, Alan, was an assistant professor of electrical engineering. Alan and Woody played for square dances and hootenannies. ( Remember those? ) Alan played banjo and mandolin and Woody played bass fiddle. Alan went out to Oregon, had his own electronics business, and died there at the age of 81.
Born in Stamford, Conn., Woody was the third of four brothers who lived in Worcester, Massachusetts. Alan was the oldest. Robert was next. He went into the army, was diagnosed with cancer, and died in Walter Reed Hospital. The youngest brother was George.
Woody graduated from Clark University in Worcester, a school famous for Robert Goddard, a pioneer in rocket science. Woody got his masters degree from there in1964 and attended a tea given in honor of Robert Goddard's widow.
Woody's middle name, Kossuth, is not known by many Americans. It is a family name. His mother, Louise Rutkay Ede, was related to Lajos Kossuth, the "George Washington" of Hungary. Lajos Kossuth was honored on two U.S. postal stamps, the four cent and the eight cent. They were part of the Champion of Liberty series.
Woody's hobby was coin collecting , but his passion was fishing. It was the great joy of his life! Keep fishing, Woody. You were loved.
