Elwood Ostrom Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5, 2016.
Ostrom, Elwood 80 May 11, 1936 Oct. 02, 2016 Elwood "Woody" Edwin Ostrom, age 80, died peacefully on Oct. 2, 2016. Woody was born in Douglas, N.D. on May 11, 1936, the third of seven children to Alice and Tom Ostrom. Following many Midwestern Norwegian families, they moved to Woodburn in 1938. He graduated from Woodburn High School in 1954, enlisted in the Army and returned home in 1957, having achieved the rank of Sergeant. He received his bachelor's degree from Mt. Angel College and a master's degree from Willamette University. In addition to a 26 year career teaching history in the Lake Oswego School District he also invested in real estate. After his retirement he focused on traveling and exploring many parts of the world. He loved everything about the outdoors: scuba diving, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, camping, fishing and hunting. Due to his love of history he never stopped studying and sharing all of his experiences with his friends and family that left lasting memories. Woody was a fearless adventurer, patient to the end, and appreciated the smallest things that nature and society had to offer. He will be painfully missed by his spouse, best friend, and companion of 55 years, Patricia; his son, Brian (Toni) Ostrom; daughter, Kimberly (David) Hoy; grandchildren, Keaton Hoy, twins Jonathan and Scott Ostrom, Lauren Hoy, and Julia Hoy; and his sisters, Sharon (Paul) King, Dolly (Dick) Murphy, and Dora Ann (Keith) Dodson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Derwin and Ed Ostrom; and his sister, Janis Vail. There will be a recitation of the rosary at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood. He will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery.

I had Mr. Ostrom for one class when I was a senior at Lakeridge High School, and he genuinely influenced my life. He was the first teacher who took me seriously as a writer and student. It meant a lot because I respected him very much. He was a great history teacher - I remember many lessons from that class 40 years later. I am very sorry that I didn't tell him this before he passed. He influenced me to become a writer and I've always been grateful to him.

I enjoyed my time spent with Woody both in school & out fishing. He was a "Kick" to be with. I'll miss him. My thoughts & prayers are with your family.

I had the pleasure of living near Woody and Patti for 10 years. They were warm and caring neighbors and we all became friends. I treasure the times we had together. I will never forget ringing their door on Christmas Eve to deliver my home made baklava and always being invited in. Once Woody went and got us some of his smoked salmon so he had something to give back. He never just drove by and waved either. He would stop in the middle of the street and roll down the car window to have a conversation! Woody will be so very missed. My love and prayers to this lovely family.

Time and distance has not callused my love for your sweet family! Childhood memories of the time Mr and Mrs Ostrom always took, first thing, when they got home from work, before dinner, just to enjoy each other's company. It was evident this was a home built on love. Clearly, their children have benefited from their beautiful example with their committed marriages. What a beautiful legacy of love and family. God bless you all and hold you tightly through this sadness. All my love and prayers are with your dear family!

I have many fond memories of Elwood growing up in Woodburn. He was my cousin on my dad's side of the family. My Grandmother Roberts delivered his father, Tom, and then delivered Elwood as she was a midwife. My brother! DuWayne Roberts, and Elwood were very close and shared many adventures together, almost like brothers. Elwood was very much a family man who loved his family and shared his life with them. My prayer for his family is to remember the good times, remain close to each other and support each other. Marilyn Roberts Edmonds
