Emanuel Friedman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 15, 2005.
FRIEDMAN, Emanuel, M.D. - Died on May 13, 2005 at age 82, in Burlingame after a protracted illness, demonstrating the same resolute spirit and equanimity he showed throughout his long and productive life. He practiced medicine (gastroenterology) for more than 50 years and taught at the University of California in San Francisco as a clinical professor for all of that time. Even after "retirement," he continued to see patients at Stanford and teach young physicians the "art" of medicine. He served Peninsula Hospital in virtually every leadership capacity including as its Chief of Staff. He served on the Hospital District Board as a fierce advocate to maintain the strength and vitality of that institution and to assure the community that this facility would survive and prosper. It is no accident that his home was just steps away from the hospital's door, a caretaker in the truest sense of the word. He championed progress in medicine, was quick to adopt new ideas and methods, often opening the path to younger individuals to follow. And as liberal as he was politically, he still lived a disciplined and conservative life. His love of Israel and his commitment to the local and worldwide Jewish Community is unmatched, and his home was a haven for all who shared that commitment. He and his wife Harriet, were recognized by the Jewish Community Federation for their outstanding contributions and very recently honored by the Wornick Jewish Day School for being instrumental in its founding and success. He was past president of the Jewish Home in San Francisco and a founding member of AIPAC, San Francisco Chapter. The list goes on but could never capture the energy, knowledge and influence that he brought to each endeavor. A veteran of WWII he was a graduate of Long Island University, U.C. Berkeley and UCSF Medical School. He had an adventurous spirit that took him across 6 continents. He enjoyed diverse settings ranging from rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon to serving in a medical clinic in Ethiopia. He is irreplaceable, but the example of his life will continue to inspire all who knew him. Manny is survived by his wife of 51 years Harriet; his son, Rabbi Matthew Friedman (wife Mary and granddaughter Talia) and daughter, Marta Friedman. He was predeceased by his son, Jeremy David. His close knit family includes sister, Rosebel and her husband Stanley Epstein and sister, Augusta and her husband Abraham Irvings; and loving nieces, nephews and extended family in Israel and Brazil. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 16th at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Temple Sholom, 1655 Sebastian Dr., Burlingame. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Jewish Home, 302 Silver Ave., SF, CA 94112, Peninsula Temple Sholom or Temple Beth Jacob, 1550 Alameda de las Pulgas, Redwood City, CA 94061. Dearest Friedman Family,

My sincere condolences to all of you. As you may remember, I worked with Dr. Friedman et al, for 15 years, and will always remember what a great man, doctor and teacher he was. As I sit and reminisce, I remember watching and growing "up" with Matthew and most of all, Dr. Friedman dancing with me at my wedding, (and oh...could he dance!!). My heart felt sympathy to all.....
