I have just learnt, with a deep sense of loss, of the passing of Professor Emeritus Hattersley. Thanks to the generosity of the late Professor, I was given the opportunity to serve out my industrial training year, 1976 to 1977, with Gerald Eve & Co. (second floor, No.18, Saville Row). I remember him with great fondness and admiration. Yes, like many of us, I feared and respected him for the boss and human being he was. I shall forever remember his encouragement and tough love in wanting us to be all we can be. Farewell, my captain, my captain, my captain. May you rest in peace. Liam C. Martin oversaw Gerald Eve's international expansion to Brussels in the late 1970's. To a young surveyor, Martin was a scary figure but he also generous and kind and I will always be in his debt for giving me the opportunity to live and work in Brussels and to see such a talented and accomplished man in action.

I have only just heard of Martin's death. He was previously married to a relative of mine, Shena. They lived in Surrey and were both great fun.

I have very fond memories of my years as Prof H's Secretary in PVM at City Unuversity - he was a very thoughtful man & a wonderful boss.
