Emily Day Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2022.
Anyone who loved Emily Noble Day knew her as a big personality: a lively, warm, intelligent young woman with a flair for the dramatic, an actress at heart. Her brilliance and sense of humor brightened a room the instant she walked in. That enthusiasm was matched by Emily's sheer volume, whether she was simply speaking or singing show tunes or classical arias from memory with perfect intonation. When Emily was five her parents were thrilled to discover a children's book called Loud Emily, by Alexis O'Neill, because it so perfectly captured their daughter – a boisterous soul who finds her purpose in life.

Born in Sylva, North Carolina in 1993, Emily graduated from Staunton, Virginia's Stuart Hall School in 2011 with a theater emphasis that served her well in stage productions both at school and at Staunton's Shakespeare Theater. She received her BA in Art History from Susquehanna University in 2015 and a post-baccalaureate degree in art conservation from Florence, Italy's Studio Art Centers International in 2016. Along with her knowledge of the technical aspects of art she was a skilled artist herself, taking on numerous drawing commissions.

Her education and interests led her to perform as a costumed interpreter at Staunton's Frontier Culture Museum, where she worked until her death. She enjoyed her colleagues and her work immensely. She loved giving tours to school groups, as she loved children, and writing and directing plays for the museum's annual Lantern Tours in December. The museum also gave her the opportunity not only to share her talents in basketmaking, cooking, brewing and cheesemaking, gardening, and building conservation, but also to demonstrate her love of all animals in caring for and doting on the museum's livestock. Her kindness, loyalty, and fairness extended to all creatures great and small.

Emily ardently believed that all people deserve equal social, political, and economic rights and opportunities. She advocated for causes dear to her, always voted, and wasn't shy about sharing her views.

On September 8, 2022, Emily joined her late father, Douglas Day IV; her uncle, Gray Barbee; grandparents, Robert and Amoret Barbee; grandfather, Douglas Day III; and grandmother, Mary Hill Caperton (Bernard Caperton). She is survived by her mother, Sarah "Sally" Barbee Day (Russell Hart); her brother, Robert Day (Nadine Turner); her aunts and uncles, Amoret and Michael Powers, Emily and Chip Whitworth, Lucinda and Ian Day, Kathryn and Douglas Wright, Mason Caperton Hood, and Linda Barbee; her cousins Benjamin Barbee, Megan Barbee Dawson (Bill), Cara Barbee, Lily Fox-Bruguiere (Anthony), Kelly Powers, Turner Whitworth (Catherine), Hayden Whitworth (Danny), Janie Day Whitworth (Izzy), Jack Whitworth (Maggie), Philip Hood (Taylor) and Katy Hood (Josh); and her adored first cousins once removed, Maylea and Piper Dawson and Naomi and Claudia Fox-Bruguiere.

There will be a private memorial celebration for Emily in October, when her ashes will be interred next to her father's and grandmother's in Lexington, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Frontier Culture Museum Foundation at https://www.frontierculturefoundation.org/.

I just found out about Emily´s passing. She was one of my first friends at Y@C. I´m sad hear about her passing and regret not keeping closer in touch after high school.

I´m thinking of you today, Emily. I have a wood and paper fan that sits on my dresser. It makes me think of you. I remember sitting on site with you and you would be fanning yourself with your wood and paper fan. It made me go out and buy one. I don´t use it anymore as a farm assistant but I still keep it on my dresser and I think of you. We have a Cotswold lamb I´m training to walk on lead. You´d like him. His name is Fred. We also have a Cotswold named Emmi for you. I miss our conversations. You are surely missed.

I keep expecting, when granddaughter Shani is around, for Emily to bounce in the door with a big smile and warm hug, saying,"Hi Nan - how are you?" Then the two long time friends disappear to catch up and I hear giggles and bursting laughter from behind closed doors. I miss that. Shani is still too devastated to talk much about her loss. She carries it heavily in her heart. Love and Light to Sally and Robin.

Sally, we did not get to meet your Emily and that is a great loss to us. The loss to you in this precious daughter is hardly fathomable and my heart goes out to you, especially this month. We know we would have loved Emily and treasured having her in our lives. What a gift to our world she has been!
May you´ve comforted by your memories and the fact that you helped her live her best life.
Sincerely, Bonnie, David & Rachel Burchfield

Our cousin Emily made us laugh in short order always at any age. She was a precious gift to us all as we now can laugh whenever and whereever we want.....instant smiles.

Her gift of spontaneous laughter and smiles will always be there for us all to tap into.

Kate, has another co-star.....

....we send Maryland, Minnesotan and Swedish hugs to Virginia, California...and beyond.

What a shock my new friend. We spent quite a bit of time together in our short acquaintance. I enjoyed that time spent, our talks and getting to know the sweet person you were. You were special and I saw how you had a way for caring for people. I am proud to have known you and you will truly be missed. My deep condolences to your family.

Emily was a bright, smiling light in our team at the museum, and I always enjoyed seeing and talking with her before the morning meetings. She has left a gap that will not be filled. Godspeed Emily!

I knew Emily many years ago during my one year of teaching at Stuart Hall. A lot has happened in the 15 years since then but I remember her. She was beautiful and special. I wish she was still here. Thank you, Emily.

Our existence was almost synonymous with each-other, no soul has ever complimented mine the way you did. No one will ever leave the impact you did. There was no one quite like you, nor will be.
I love you always, and will tell stories to juni of "auntie Em".
She cuddled peepers for you.
Shine your brightest for us up there.

I've had this photo on my desk since I heard the news that Emily was gone. She tore through the role of Katherina in "The Taming of the Shrew," with all the wit, skill, and moxie the role demands, and more. It was a joy and an honor to make theatre with her, and we made quite a bit during our shared time working and learning together. She was fierce. I miss her.
I love you, Emily.
