Emily Looney Phipps Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 6, 2023.
Emily Looney Phipps Johnson, age 39 of Memphis passed away from complications from pneumonia on Sunday, January 1, 2023, surrounded by family.

Emily was born in Memphis, Tennessee, December 2, 1983 to David and Wanda Looney.

She attended St. Agnes School, and graduated from Cordova High School in 2002, and enjoyed being on the Pom Squad there. After High School, Emily attended Baptist College of Nursing, graduating with her BSN in 2006. In 2018, she went on to get her Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner License. At the time of her death, she was employed by the Alliance Crisis Center.

Emily was really smart. She was a wonderful and loving Mom to Hudson and Brady. She loved to read an especially good murder mystery or detective story. She also enjoyed reading about mental health and nutrition for her chosen field of work. She loved herbal tinctures, medicine and science. She also enjoyed yoga, gardening, and finding items on the side of the road, repairing and restoring them, and then selling them.

One of Emily's favorite quotes was, "The radical ideas of one generation are often common sense to the next." - Unknown

Emily was fun-loving and adventurous. She and Gordon travelled to Haiti in 2013 on a medical mission trip to St. Vincent's School for Handicapped Children in Port au Prince, and her loving heart was deeply moved by the experience. She loved travelling with her family, most recently to Puerto Rico, as well.

Emily and Gordon were best friends, lovers, and were truly inseparable. They quickly fell in love and never turned back. Gordily was their nickname together, and will be carried on in Gordon's heart.

Emily is survived by her husband Gordon, her sons Hudson and Brady, her parents, her dearest friend Kristin Stewart, her beloved Weimaraner Gracie (who she referred to as "Grandma Gracie") and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A private family service will be held for Emily on Friday, January 13th, 2023. A public visitation in celebration of Emily's life will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at St. Columba Camp and Conference Center, 4577 Billy Maher Road, Bartlett, Tennessee from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Johnson Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks you to consider making a contribution in Emily's honor to the important medical research into psychedelic healing by MAPS.org, or to a charity of your choice.

I am a doctor that worked with Emily at Case Management. She was such a beautiful person inside and out . I loved talking to her about medicine, her husband and her children. I just found out. She was an amazing mother, wife, nurse practitioner and friend. My heart is so heavy but my love is with your family and I pray for your family to be at peace....you were such a hard worker and an inspiration . You will be missed.

Wanda and David I´m so sorry and no words to help your feelings but I will be here for you. I´ve been with Emily the whole 39 yrs. She always has a beautiful smile and very soft spoken and did I say she was a very smart girl? She could read a book in one day that would take me two weeks or longer, Emily we love you and we will see you again. Aunt laine

David and Wanda, I am so sorry you have to let go of Emily so soon. There are no words to help you feel better. Stay close to the boys as long as you can. Talk about Emily to anyone who will listen. Somehow, that helps. Great advise from someone you only knew as as a kid. Just remember, I had to grow up. I love the fact that I was almost a part of your family. I still miss morning coffee with Mr.Looney and Mitzi!

I worked with Emily at Crisis as my nurse on shift, and also as NP, she was a very sweet person with a very calm voice, she would always encourage me to pursue my education in nursing, and never give up, no matter how hard it is, I appreciate the opportunity and the times I have got to know Emily... my prayers are with the family always .
