Erhardt Weber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 21, 2010.
Erhardt Paul "Breeze" Weber December 14, 1917 - June 21, 2010 Dr. E. P. Weber was born in Racine, WI to Fredrick and Magdelen Weber, the fifth of eight children. He graduated from Concordia College in Milwaukee, WI in 1937. He then attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis and later in his career received an S.T.M. degree from this institution. He also attended Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN where he received a B.A. in 1940. When World War II broke out, Dr. Weber accepted a missionary parish in Gainesville, FL with a preaching station in Ocala. He also served as a chaplain at Camp Blanding, as well as a student chaplain at the University of FL. In 1945 he became the first Lutheran full-time chaplain at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. During his thirteen years at Purdue, in addition to serving his own congregation, he helped to establish congregations in Crawfordsville and Greencastle, Indiana. In 1958 he accepted the call to be president of Concordia College in Portland, OR, a post which he held for the next 25 years. During his tenure at Concordia, he also attended the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago where he received his S.T.D. in 1962. E.P.'s life and career were devoted to weaving the Gospel of our God into every thought and activity of his private and public life. This was especially true during his presidency at Concordia, where with the help of dedicated faculty, staff and administrators, the community adopted the phrase, "the Christological pursuit of teaching and learning" as their mantra. After 25 years as president of Concordia, at the age of 65, Dr. Weber resigned his position. He went on to play a key role in the newly established Lay Assistant Ministry Program of the Northwest District of the LCMS. He retired from that post in 1991. His entire lifetime has been filled with joyous contentment, sprinkled with sorrows, which under our God's gracious direction became bridges for the strengthening for the journey of his faith. E.P. was active throughout his life in various societal activities, using his hands for God's work. He served as president of the Gainesville Junior Chamber of Commerce, he began the Tippecanoe County Mental Health Association, was a member of the Tualatin Valley Board of Directors and also of the Rules Committee of the Mountain Park Home Owners Association. He was also a lifelong, diehard fan of the Chicago Cubs. E.P. was preceded in death by his first wife, Joann Tyson Weber. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Jennifer and Scott Seefeld, Judy and Norm Withrow, Jane and Walt Lierman, Andy Weber and Tim and Misty Weber, his wife, Nancy Wear Weber, his step-children Jill and Tom Skewrski, Paul and Sue Rosenwinkel, Ann Rosenwinkel and Mark and Kristen Rosenwinkel, and his 18 grandchildren, Christopher, Hilary, Jon, Erick, Reid, Lisa, Benjamin, Bryan, Adelyn, Jack, Martha, Grace, Emma, Daniel, Sophia, Calloway, Olivia and Julia Rose. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 27, 2010 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 6700 N.E. 29th, Portland, OR, 97211. Burial will be held Monday, June 28, 2010 at Finley-Sunset Hills Cemetery. Arrangements by Finley-Sunset Hills. Memorials may be made to the E.P. Weber Family Center for Applied Lutheran Leadership Director Endowment, care of Concordia University, 2811 N.E. Holman Blvd., Portland, OR, 97211 or to the Good Shepherd Fund, care of Andy Weber, 1641 N. First St., Suite 155, San Jose, CA, 95112. A parting message written by E.P., "My thanks to each and to all of you for your encouragement and support. It is for that reason that this service is a celebration, giving thanks to our great God and to all of his servants from whom all blessings flow..."
